Even the most dedicated oenophiles might not recognize the Paicines AVA, but most have partaken of wine made from its grapes. The Paicines AVA is located within the larger San Benito AVA, in the heart of San Benito County. Although this small AVA does not have the benefit of elevation to moderate its climate, it is still affected by the last breath of cool coastal breezes, which have found gaps through the coastal mountain ranges. The climate is distinctly warmer than the neighboring Cienega, Mt. Harlan and Lime Kiln AVAs, but cooler than the Central Valley to the east. Paicines hosts the 500+ acre Vista Verde Vineyard, once owned by Almaden and currently by New York-based Dyson. The appellation produces a wide of variety of grapes that supply not only Dyson, but many of California’s largest and most prolific wineries. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

Paicines on Snooth

  • Having homemade pizza on the grill... zucchini, mushroom, orange bell pepper, ... a 2009 Georis Cab France, Paicines.   It did pair very nicely with the meal.  A bit darker fruit than I like in a CF, but really good... earthy, mushroom, slight tobacco nose- getting blackberry and some green vegetal on the palate, followed by that tad of tobacc... • Jacuzzi Family Vineyard Arneis Paicines 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite herbal on the nose, with notes of sage and nettle over small white fruits all topped with noticeable alcohol. There are a lot of pollen aromas in the mouth here, and this does show some lovely dusty mineral notes and a nice core of lightly creamy citrus fruit,s but the alcohol intrudes on the finish. Not a big wine, but this does show some... Read More

  • Donati Family Ezio Paicines 2008

    Snoothrank:

A nice loamy note greets the nose along with hints of graphite, mint and loads of cedar spice. This has a sweet/sour thing going on the palate with a bit of Tootsie Roll over the base of pomegranate and sour cherry fruit. Theres a touch of meatiness on the back end and a touch of wood tannin that emerges along with it. The fruit is red and fresh... Read More

  • Donati Family Ezio Paicines 2006

    Snoothrank:

91 points.Deep, dark, and tight, the aroma of this wine gushes with blackcurrant juice. There is a clear, wet stone component mixed in with notes of black leather, driftwood, and an overall shadowy, dark forest quality.Just as tight and classic Bordeaux-like as the nose leads you to expect, this wine could almost be confused for a Left Bank blen... • Donati Family Vineyard Sorelle Per Sempre Paicines 2006

    Snoothrank:

91 points.Blackcurrant, black plum, exotic wood and potpourri blend with lavender and Bing cherries on the nose. Forest herbs and wild flowers open up with a spin in glass to create a very inviting, lovely mix of aromas.Supple, smooth, and refined, this is a deeply silky, beautiful wine on the palate. Notes of lavender and black raspberry appear... Read More

  • Tal Padre From Donati Family Vineyard Paicines Red Blend Red 2006

    Snoothrank:

90 points. The aroma of Tal Padre is black olive toned with deep mineral driven soil components. Its foresty and earthy, with a moss and pine character that evolves into wild mushrooms and forest berries with a spin in the glass.Sassafras, blackcurrant, and dried raspberry introduce the palate. There is a hint of suede which carries with it a tig... Read More
