is the source for many high profile wineries’ ‘Coastal’ lines, but the county name and its six American Viticultural Areas have been noticeably absent from wine labels for almost two decades. An exception is Josh Jensen’s Calera Wine Company, the county’s leading advocate of ‘terroir’ for close to 30 years. In 1990, Calera received official AVA status for their own Mount Harlan AVA, located in the high elevations of the Gabilan Mountain range. Times are changing and the image of San Benito County as a viable and diverse wine region is gaining momentum. New winery and vineyard developments and the resurrection of old vineyard plots should be credited with this resurgence. This has led to an almost four fold increase in vineyard acreage in the last decade. Once the almost exclusive domain of former industry giant Almaden, San Benito County now boasts a healthy mix of small and large scale wineries and vineyards supplying some of the state’s most prestigious wineries including Beaulieu Vineyards Read more »

  • Jacuzzi Family Vineyard Arneis Paicines 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite herbal on the nose, with notes of sage and nettle over small white fruits all topped with noticeable alcohol. There are a lot of pollen aromas in the mouth here, and this does show some lovely dusty mineral notes and a nice core of lightly creamy citrus fruit,s but the alcohol intrudes on the finish. Not a big wine, but this does show some... Read More

  • Donati Family Ezio Paicines 2008

    Snoothrank:

A nice loamy note greets the nose along with hints of graphite, mint and loads of cedar spice. This has a sweet/sour thing going on the palate with a bit of Tootsie Roll over the base of pomegranate and sour cherry fruit. Theres a touch of meatiness on the back end and a touch of wood tannin that emerges along with it. The fruit is red and fresh... Read More

  • Pietra Santa Sangiovese Cienega Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

This smells intense. At first it is low and dusty, and very stony on the nose, then come light notes of jammy red fruit accented by Maduro tobacco, briarwood and sage with a background note of cumin. Very broad in the mouth with a nice transparent feel, though air does add weight here. The fruit is bright cherry fruit, a little bitter around the... Read More
