North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

North Coast on Snooth

  • Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon California 2009

    Snoothrank:

Fine and focused on the nose with a simple expression of sweet blackberry fruit framed by hints of grilled meat and mint. A little sweet on entry, though nicely red-fruited, this turns a bit hollow on the mid-palate with lots of fruit tannins adding richness to the texture. It seems to lack a little intensity of flavor, but feels friendly enoug... Read More

  • Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley Single Vineyard Alexander's Crown Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Opening with nice leather and spice aromas this quickly becomes dominated by lots of spicy, nutty oak on the nose. Dark, full and slightly dense on the palate, there's a lot of dark chocolate wrapped around dark fruit here with a spicy, almost peppery finish. This feels and tastes extracted, a bit of a black hole of a wine with a powerful if ho... Read More

  • Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

    Snoothrank:

Very pleasant cab as it it introduced to the palate. Maybe a tad more fruity than a lot of California Cabernets. Flavors include blackbery or maybe black cherry. Very sedate tannins would make this wine attractive to a lot of people. US$16.99 at Costco a year ago. Read More

  • Grgich Hills Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown 2006

    Snoothrank:

Sweet lavender and violet nose with currant and dark loamy soil. Blackberry juice. On the palate, luscious fruit showing. Rich and polished with nice cassis, kirsch and black cherry flavors. Dry. Nicely balanced and I think can keep aging. Grippy tannins with pretty fruit and good minerality. Big wine. 90 pts.5/10/1 at winery Read More

  • Grgich Hills Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Yountville Selection 2008

    Snoothrank:

Nose of currant, cherry and other red fruits. Hints of camphor. Lots of kirsch. Nice mineral edge to it. Floral and feminine style with great balance and a lighter structure. Pretty red berry fruit and lavender. Finish is a touch tart, but should round out with a bit more age in bottle. 88 pts.5/10/13 at winery Read More
