North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Isabel Mondavi Deep Rose Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

A bit buttery on the nose with lots of black fruit that shows a jammy quality and a fairly spicy and vaguely meaty quality to the nose. A hint on the sweet side though with good, well integrated acids helping to keep this balanced. this is rather fruit, black currant and boysenberry fruits show a bit of jaminess and a subtle cocoa and tree bark ... • J Vineyards Vin Gris Rose of Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Red cherry, red currant and lightly floral green herb notes greet the nose. Smooth, supple and seamless in the mouth, this is slinky and focused with a nice array of slightly jammy red fruits but for my palate it trades in refreshing drinkability for some of that suppleness. theres a lovely pop of minerality and detail on the backend, with just ... • Steltzner Vineyards Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Claret 2006

    Snoothrank:

Very nice purply color. Oaky, woody nose. Disappointingly light on initial introduction to the tonguealmost watery. As the wine passes over the tongue, and past the palate, though, blackberry and currant flavors can be detected. Then, there is a big hit of tanninvery drying on the tongue. I think that as this wine warms (I just pulled it ou... Read More

  • Trentadue Winery Old Patch Red Sonoma County 2010

    Snoothrank:

Dark and earthy on the nose with toasty oak spice and hints of licorice and dried herbs framing a core of dark, plummy fruit. Soft yet bright in the mouth with a hint of sweetness but mostly bright, herb and earth inflected blackberry fruit framed with hints of vanilla and toasted spices. This sits rather upright in the mouth with a fair amount ... Read More

  • Well, he's also making wine in Brooklyn, which is where I am now. So if the plan is to buy grapes somewhere in California, ship them down, and turn them into wine, it's a shorter distance than sending them to the east coast! And there is indeed a tradition of doing that - it's what was done during Prohibition and I still know some Italians in Be... Read More
