North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.
The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Mauritson Wines Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 2009

I had this off a wine list at one of Donnie Wahlberg's restaurants in Hingham, MA. It was by the glass on the bar. I was amazed at how nice it was. It stands up to some of the best, my Brown, Cline, Rosenbaum, Ridge, should I go on. If you follow my Zin recommendations you will know this rates if I write about it. Read More

  • Quivet Cellars Pellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Nose shows some dark fruit, and some leather. Pleasant hit of currant on the tip of the tongue. Some, pucker tannin, but only what is expected. Sure enough, as the wine passes under the rear palate there is the leather or, maybe, tobacco, or, maybe, powdered cocoa sensation. Fruit seems to linger on the aftertaste. Read More

  • Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Karia Chardonnay 2014

Seriously oaky nose. Lots of butter on the tongue, but, also, tropical fruits, and, maybe, citrus fruits. Fruit component is most in the acid, which, thankfully, cuts the oaky better a bit. Read More

  • Schug Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2015

Clean, light nose of floral cherry fruit and light red currant aromas. Approachable and pleasing on the palate, this is tart, fresh and juicy, showing good cherry and mixed berry fruit with even a touch of watermelon tucked in alongside a light smoke and herbal spice towards the finish. • Smith Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

A nose of forest floorstrong suggestion of olive. On the tongue a nice, subtle introduction of cassis. As the wine moves back I have to notice the very subdued tannin. My experience with Spring Mountain cabs is that they are tannic monsters. Some earthiness. While this is a firm, full-bodied wine, it is not causing my mouth and tongue to pu... Read More

  • Limerick Lane Block Zinfandel 2012

Noticeable alcohol on the nose, and its been open for about 20 minutes. Tip-of-the-tongue fruit is quite sedate. There is blackberry and, maybe, dried fruitraisins, prunesbut the fruitiness in nice, not obnoxious. A nice, robust, full-bodied Zinfandel. Stout, but, again, not obnoxious tannin. Could, probably, be an excellent candidate for ... Read More

  • Davis Bynum Pinot Noir Jane's Vineyard 2014

Fresh candied cherry and strawberry aromas with sweet baking spice and violet petals on the nose. A bit spicy on entry, this is cool and soft on the palate showing more cherry and strawberry fruit and adding some cranberry, a bit medicinal through the mid palate and nicely earthy and streaked with a hint of tarry minerality towards the finish.
