North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • EMark, we must have been on the same wavelength last night as I opened a '15 Bedrock North Coast Syrah. Have a few of those Carlisles in the cellar and have been wondering if I should give one a go.The Bedrock was big boned with plenty of fruit and French oak to allow it to age for a decade or more but as a young wine was very enjoyable and a go... • Okay, I still disagree.  We have a good selection of European wines here, but not AS GOOD as some places on the East Coast. If you are talking restaurants, there's RN74 for burg (and not much else, including food), a few places for Italian.  If you are talking wine stores, K&L for Bordeaux, North Berkeley for Burgundy, WineHouse for Burgundy and... • Ceritas Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Escarpa Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Light-coloredprune--in the glass. Cherry and some astringency on the nose. Certainly a light-bodied red wine. Cherry and cola suggestions. Nice acid tartness. As I have commented before, this is not a powerhouse wine. Its certainly easy to drink, and I do like it for that, but, frankly, to me, it lacks the complexity that I would like to s... Read More

  • JD, don't knock that co-fermentation, IMHO it really does add positive elements. Sounds like a good focus for an offline somewhere. Single-grape syrahs vs. those that are co-fermented with viognier. Three zones for focus: France, Oz and West Coast of North America. Historically I've also been of the school of thought that, other than in Chateau ... Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs 2012

    Snoothrank:

PnPed. Musty nose. May blow off in a few minutes. Red fruit on entrysome raspberry, but, as much as anything, thing not very tart cranberry, if such a thing exists. Firm but not obtrusive tannin. I would give a similar description for acid. Far from the most full-bodied Zin. Sure enough. The mustiness on the nose on opening was probably... Read More

  • Quivira Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

This received some fairly good reviews and scores and it was recommended to me. For me zins should show blackberry, briary, earthy notes with maybe sage,This really is the opposite - red fruits, some dark cherry are up front. The wine is mellow and not the bold zin that I appreciate most. For it's style it's fine - just not my cup of tea or wi... Read More

This Cabernet is in its prime. The tannins have slightly withdrawn. Everything you want a great cab to be is definitely in this vintage. The finish is medium. Read More
