North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.
The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Ridge Three Valleys 2014

Fair amount of red berry fruit. Maybe, a tad more than Id like to see. Moderately tannic. Nicely acidic. Definitely, not a rustic zin. OK for the price, but a disappointment if one is expecting something along the lines of Ridges single vineyard bottlings. Read More

  • Ridge Zinfandel East Bench Vineyard Dry Creek Valley 2015

Dark ruby in color. Red and blue fruit on the nose though a little shy. Shy on the palate too. Medium acidity with a long slightly dry finish. Like the wine really just doesn't represent value to me. Read More

  • Valley of the Moon Zinfandel 2010

Lots of berries on the nose. An unfortunate sourness on first taste. That seemed to pass after a few minutes. Blackberries and some herbal sensationsmint, sage. Then some candied fruit. For $15 a functional Zin. I just bought this wine a few days ago, and it was the last one in the bin. It may have been in the store too long. Read More

  • Bear Flag Zinfandel Sonoma County 2015

Dusty, dry aromas of raspberry, cherry and plum. This is juicy and fresh in the mouth but expansive and explosive in intensity with thick tannins, blueberry and black cherry flavors, bold well integrated spice and a return to dusty dry notes of jammy black currant fruit and oak spice on the finish. • Whitehall Lane Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

Lovely wine. Currant, blueberry on the tip of the tongue. A sturdy wine, but civilized. Tannins and acids are nicely integrated. Some slight suggestionsuggestion, not flavorof licorice. Some dustiness. Some fungal happenings on the aftertaste. Read More

  • Ravenswood Sonoma County Old Vine Zinfandel 2014

Licorice and rich spice on the nose with soft cherry and red currant notes, lightly floral. Dark mixed berry, gritty tannins and brooding spice with black cherry and blackberry flavors, a not-so-subtle earthiness on the finish thats thick with tar and espresso notes. Read More

  • Sterling Vineyards Merlot Napa Valley 2014

Wonderful elegant full-bodied wine even at the regular price - everything speaks of quality. At least a half star added for the deal they have on Costco right now after a $6 instant discount (off the Costco price, mind you) - $8.99! At Sterling's site, this is $28. At this price, it is cheaper than Costco's own case-discounted 2016 Vintner's C... Read More

  • Beringer Private Reserve Chardonnay 2014

Not surprisingly, pretty heavily oaked. So there is the buttery, caramel thing going on here. However, there is refreshing citrus--grapefuit-- and tropical fruit--pineapple, kiwi--that provide an excellent counterpoint. Super acidity lasts throughout a quite lengthy finish. Read More

  • River Road Russian River Valley Sonoma County Reserve Pinot Noir 2016

Garnet in color and shy on the nose. Medium light in weight, light dark cherry fruit with good acidity and very light tannins. Needs food. Not a bad wine just nothing to cause me to look for it again. Read More
