North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Gundlach Bundschu Gewurztraminer Sonoma Coast 2013

    Snoothrank:

This gewürztraminer is light and floral on the nose, tastes of peaches and lychee without the residual sugars that might be expected. According to the winery, this can be cellared for up to 15 years. Read More

  • So (and with apologies to the OP) making this the thread about hillside herbal and spice notes in wines of CA or France (or Spain or wherever) I'll ask some more specific questions here:What CA wines have demonstrated these notes of hillside 'garrigue', sagebrush, whatever for you? • Unless you're an utter Revolutionary War geek, or want to get down and dirty and maybe survive a visit with the utterly wrong crowd, I think I already did. • Trefethen Chardonnay Harmony 2012

    Snoothrank:

Nicely balanced Napa chardonnay. Nothing over the top but good creamy lemon, ripe gala apple, a very slight touch of butterscotch, a hint of oak, decent acidity and a medium finish. Along with the acidity there's also a bit of creaminess on the palate. Very similar to the 2011. Read More

  • Trefethen Chardonnay Harmony 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not bad but not great Napa chardonnay. Expected a lot more but this was fairly simple and not very complex. Nice stone fruit, some ripe pear and melon, medium to low acidity and a short to medium finish. Read More

  • Spell Nichole's Blend Sonoma County Pinot Noir 2012

    Snoothrank:

The fruit for the 2012 Nicholes Blend, a California Pinot Noir wine comes from the DeVoto, Hurst and Lorenzo Vineyards as well as declassified barrels our Vineyard Designated wines. From as far south as the Petaluma Gap, where the cold maritime breezes help to produce wines of excellent purity and elegance; to the East on top of Sonoma Mountain,... Read More

  • Jemrose Syrah "Cardiac Hill" Bennett Valley Sonoma 2009

    Snoothrank:

I'm on Day 2 with this wine. On Day 1 I found it to be angular and lean--almost watery. There were some stone fruit flavors on the tip of the tongue, but the overwhelming mouth sensation was drying tannins and bitterness from mid- ot rear-palate. Today the wine is a bit more round, but, still not much fruit. This wine is pretty highly regard... Read More
