North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Titus Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

Dark reddish purple. Red fruit (?) aromas with, maybe, some mint. Stout oaky bouquet. On the tongue, lots of fruitmore cassis and blueberrybut also some sort of cinnamony spiciness. Quite serious tannin on the edge of the tongue. Good supporting acid. Probably, one that I should not have opened quite yet. Read More

  • Robin recently took the winemaking position at Swanson Vineyards in Oakville and I stopped by yesterday to pay him a visit. It was the first time I had been to Swanson which was started by the frozen foods Swanson's back in 1985. Situated on their Estate of 100 acres of Cabernet and Merlot just off Hwy 29 it's easy to find. I drove past the tast... Read More

  • Rodney Strong Symmetry 2012

    Snoothrank:

Strong cedar and cinnamon spice box aromas with plenty of heat and ripe cherries. Quite juicy and full in the mouth with baking spices and black cherry aromas, waves of white chocolate and caramel, reasonably good tannic structure and some blackberries and blueberries on the long finish. • Aspara Syrah Carneros las Madres Vineyard 2013

    Snoothrank:

Opened from my vault and let a glass sit for about a half-hour before tasting. Viney or herbaceous nose. However, as the wine warms up a bit Im starting to get a cocoa or mocha thing. A bit stark on entry. Light hit of various red-fruit flavorsred plum, red cherry. Something of a hint of coffee or, maybe, nuttiness around the edge of the to... Read More

  • Maclaren Wines Maclaren Syrah Judge Family Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Not bad but not great Sonoma (Bennett Valley) syrah. Dark ripe berries on the nose with a hint of tobacco. Lots of ripe blackberry, a bit of earthiness, some cola, ripe black cherry and a touch of cedar on the palate. The acidity is fairly bright but the tannins are a bit short and the finish is of medium length. Read More

  • Ravenswood Zinfandel Barricia 2012

    Snoothrank:

This is about a 30-35 dollar Zin and it's well worth it. Very odiferous of ripe berries, cassis, floral and spice. It's taste is of dark fruits, earth, dust, lively acids to maintain it's freshness and tannins that hit the mark. A lovely cranberry spice coats the mouth with a slight lingering of bing cherry. • Mauritson Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County 2011

    Snoothrank:

Very attractive dark purple color. Fruit aromastart cherry, red raspberry. Some oak vanilla bouquet. Fairly lean on the palate. Fruit still seems tart, but there is also a dried fruit aspect. Some mineral or volcanic hints in the back. Fairly stout tannin. An OK wine, but not one that I would seek out. While there is sufficient tannin a... Read More
