North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Smith-Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004

    Snoothrank:

Lots of woodsiness in the noseI get that, a lot, from Spring Mountain fruit. Nicely settled black cassis fruit. Towards the back of the palate there are certainly the suggestions of leather or tobacco. A decade, or so, of bottle age has certainly calmed down the tannins, but this wine is no wimp. It will stand up to the most robust meal. Wi... Read More

  • Terra Valentine Cabernet Franc Napa Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

Very pretty purple color. Berries on entryblueberry seems to provide sweetishness and blackberry seems to provide jamminess. There are, also, some plum flavors. Some still very serious tanninthat seems to be a signature characteristic of Spring Mountain red wines--but Im liking it. Tannin, understandably, causes some roughness way in the rea... Read More

  • Quivet Cellars Kenefick Ranch Syrah 2013

    Snoothrank:

A quite rich wine. Blackberry on entrydangerously close to jamminess. The wine, though, does acquire an attractive savoriness. Still some pretty sturdy tannin. Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs Dry Creek Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Some dustiness in the nose. Red fruit on entry, but, thankfully, not jammy or syrupynice acid tartness seems to deflect those possibilities. A bit light on tannin compared to my memory of previous vintages. An easy to drink wine, but I think more sideways storage will integrate the components, better. Read More

  • Patz & Hall Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard 2013

    Snoothrank:

The kind of pinot that I like. Not in your face with fruit. There is, in fact red fruit, here, but it is a suggestion, only. That is a good thing. Another suggestion of spicenutmeg? Some earthiness, and some sourness, Appropriately, for a Pinot Noir, not full-bodied, at all. Read More
