North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Charles Krug Generations Cabernet Sauvignon 2013

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep, inky black at the center, with bright ruby along the edges, classic for a Napa Cabernet. The nose is a lovely combination of graphite, leather, black cherry and a hint of blueberry. The taste is a lovely rush of black fruit, cherry cola and mocha that transition to some mineral notes midpalate. The finish is wonderful, wit... Read More

  • Gauthier Select Vineyards Pinot Noir Rockin H Ranch Vyd 2012

    Snoothrank:

Like many of the 2012 Pinot Noirs Ive had, this one is rather tannic in structure, and its an open question as to whether the fruit will last long enough for the tannins to resolve themselves. In terms of nose and mouthfeel, this wine is more reminiscent of a Zinfandel than a Pinot Noir in fact, in many ways it recalls the Los Chamizal Zinfande... Read More

  • Limerick Lane 1023 2014

    Snoothrank:

Bright, tart red fruitcherryon entry. Interestingly, enough, the tartness almost suggests citrus, and, going really crazy, orange as much as anything. Some woodiness mid-palate. Medium-bodied. Not much tannin to speak of. A fun, easy-to-drink wine. Read More

  • Rodney Strong Rose of Pinot Noir Russian River Valley 2016

    Snoothrank:

Pleasant watermelon and cherry aromas are quite juicy and inviting. This has a fresh tingling acidity and a zesty spice on the palate, playful and clean with excellent fruit notes of cranberry, cherry and strawberry leading up to a bit of an earthy finish. Read More

  • Mayacamas Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder Napa Mountain 1984

    Snoothrank:

Very pretty wine in the glass with no bricking appearance. Some funk on the nose, but otherwise suggestive of black fruit. On the tip of the tongue, Im getting a bit of tart dark fruit. As the wine passes back I am enjoying the elegance that comes from years (decades, in this case) of bottle age. However, there is a slight suggestion of oxid... Read More

  • "the southernmost extremes of Ontario are actually further south than Bordeaux"I love shit like this.  As if the only thing that mattered was latitude.  (Or soil, or mean daily temperature, or... take your pick.) Has this writer ever been to either place?  I haven't been to Bordeaux, but I know that area in Ontario and Western NY pretty well.  L... Read More

  • EMark, we must have been on the same wavelength last night as I opened a '15 Bedrock North Coast Syrah. Have a few of those Carlisles in the cellar and have been wondering if I should give one a go.The Bedrock was big boned with plenty of fruit and French oak to allow it to age for a decade or more but as a young wine was very enjoyable and a go... • Okay, I still disagree.  We have a good selection of European wines here, but not AS GOOD as some places on the East Coast. If you are talking restaurants, there's RN74 for burg (and not much else, including food), a few places for Italian.  If you are talking wine stores, K&L for Bordeaux, North Berkeley for Burgundy, WineHouse for Burgundy and...
