North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.
The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Wine 2012

Stunning wine for the price and age has done it well. Blackberries in spades, currant, a touch of sweet black cherries on the back end, a slight touch of oak to boot. This is generous, smooth and full bodied. The tannins are rounded and are balanced with good acidity. Tremendous QPR. Hold for 3-5 yrs. or drink, why wait? 92 points - Paul Read More

  • Ridge Geyserville 2007

Somewhat of a sour nose. Quite light hit of berry fruit on the tip of the tongue. Tannins are diminished to a chalky sensation. Very delightful on the rear palate. It seems like an integrated, mature wine experience in that areavery smooth. Sourness detected on the nose seems to have dissipated with just a few minutes of air. Read More

  • Zin-Phomaniac Reserve Old Vines Zinfandel Sonoma County 2014

Cool blueberry and black cherry fruit with oregano and mixed dried herb on the nose with mixed baking spice. Much warmer and richer on the palate, with zesty spiciness, a bloom of acidity, and red fruit flavors of cherry, raspberry, strawberry, and clove and cinnamon spice on the finish. A touch of sweet spice and fruit gives a bit of an illusio... Read More

  • Gallo Signature Series Chardonnay Sonoma Coast 2014

Cool peach and green apple aromas with coconut flakes and a hint of dried apricot. Demonstrating a creaminess on entry but quickly throwing some tart lemon and fresh acidity, some golden berry and more green apple towards the finish that has a touch of oak to it. Read More

  • Spring Mountain Elivette Red 2003

Beautiful Spring Mtn. Vineyard cab blend (88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc). The perfume nose consists of cocoa powder and ripe raspberry. There's a tongue coating presence of red plum, raspberry, black licorice and tamarind balanced by prominent but fine grained tannin, medium (-) acidity, and a long finish. Read More

  • Sirens Muse Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2012

A Tasting Room selection from a few months ago. Their onsite description seems accurate to me. 'Aromas of wild berries, savory dried herbs and subtle earthiness are immediately evident upon pouring. On the palate, flavors of ripe cherries, black tea and pomegranate are framed by fine-grained tannins, earthy minerality and bright acidity. This wi... Read More

  • Mauritson Wines Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 2009

I had this off a wine list at one of Donnie Wahlberg's restaurants in Hingham, MA. It was by the glass on the bar. I was amazed at how nice it was. It stands up to some of the best, my Brown, Cline, Rosenbaum, Ridge, should I go on. If you follow my Zin recommendations you will know this rates if I write about it. Read More

  • Quivet Cellars Pellet Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2012

Nose shows some dark fruit, and some leather. Pleasant hit of currant on the tip of the tongue. Some, pucker tannin, but only what is expected. Sure enough, as the wine passes under the rear palate there is the leather or, maybe, tobacco, or, maybe, powdered cocoa sensation. Fruit seems to linger on the aftertaste. Read More
