North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Carlisle Montafi Ranch Russian River Zinfandel 2014

    Snoothrank:

Fairly complex Zinfandel. Lots of opening fruitsome berry but, also stone fruit. Then the old Zinfandel bramble from the 1980slike sticks and stems. This provides a bitter sensation to contrast with the sweetness of the opening fruit. Nice stiff tannin and sturdy acid. Im one who is eager to pop the cork on my wines, and while I am, in fact... • Smith-Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2004

    Snoothrank:

Lots of woodsiness in the noseI get that, a lot, from Spring Mountain fruit. Nicely settled black cassis fruit. Towards the back of the palate there are certainly the suggestions of leather or tobacco. A decade, or so, of bottle age has certainly calmed down the tannins, but this wine is no wimp. It will stand up to the most robust meal. Wi... Read More

  • Terra Valentine Cabernet Franc Napa Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

Very pretty purple color. Berries on entryblueberry seems to provide sweetishness and blackberry seems to provide jamminess. There are, also, some plum flavors. Some still very serious tanninthat seems to be a signature characteristic of Spring Mountain red wines--but Im liking it. Tannin, understandably, causes some roughness way in the rea... Read More

A quite rich wine. Blackberry on entrydangerously close to jamminess. The wine, though, does acquire an attractive savoriness. Still some pretty sturdy tannin. Read More
