North Coast Wine

The North Coast AVA is a region that spans eight counties and dozens of prestigious subregions within California. The Pacific Ocean creates cooling air and fog conditions that benefit quality grapegrowing. Most of the wines produced in the area use their own subregion on the label, so wines labeled North Coast are often ones made with a blend of grapes from different parts of the region.

The North Coast is further subdivided into the following regions:
Humboldt County
Lake County
Marin County
Mendocino County
Napa County
Sonoma County
Solano County
Trinity County

  • Beaulieu Vineyards Tapestry Reserve 2005

    Snoothrank:

Deep purple color. Very pleasant nose with some caramel, some berry fruit. Very mellow entry on the tongue. Fair amount of rich fruitblackberry, prune. As the wine passes back, fruitiness declines. Some earthiness, some hint of cinnamon or clove. Tannins are fully resolved. Another easy-to-drink wine. Better than average, but not great. Read More

  • Seghesio Zinfandel Sonoma Rockpile 2012

    Snoothrank:

Big, juicy Rockpile zin by Seghesio. Black cherry and black licorice on the nose. Loads of ripe black cherry, blackberry, black plum, more licorice/anise, some earthiness, nice acidity, fine grained tannins and a medium long finish. Read More

  • Clos du Bois Knights Valley Petite Sirah Sonoma Reserve 2011

    Snoothrank:

This is not the best for the price point. It's full of blackberry and mellow tannins but that's about it. Perhaps it needs more time in the bottle to round out. Basically I expected more complexity but no............it's an average nice tasting wine with no special depth Read More

  • Apsara Sauvignon Blanc Rivers Reach 2014

    Snoothrank:

Just a fantastic Napa Sauv Blanc from Apsara. This is not about grapefruit but more subtle and balanced citrus and stone fruit. There's plenty of nice ripe white peach, green melon, a hint of lime, a touch of grassiness, medium acidity and a medium finish. Read More

  • Okay, getting back to the topic at hand, in effect the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is the other side of those mountains.  Arroyo Seco is basically due east of Big Sur.  And there's San Antonio Valley a little further south.  (Pierce Family, whom I have touted on the "Completely Different" thread, are down there.)  Here's a nice map: http://wine.ap... • Apsara Sauvignon Blanc Kick Ranch 2014

    Snoothrank:

Big nosegrapefruit, grass, some floral hints. On entry, the grapefruit is apparent, but it does subside. Grassiness noted in the nose is also there as a secondary flavor feature. As you might guess, there is lots of acidity from entry through finish. As the wine warms up a bit (Id pulled it right froom the fridge) there is gren apple includi... Read More
