St. Helena is known as the “heart of the Napa Valley” wine region of California. Ironically, this thriving town built on the wine industry gets its name from the 1850s St. Helena Chapter (named for the mountain in the distance) of the Sons of Temperance, an organization dedicated to the reform and prevention of “drunkards.”

In 1861, German immigrant Charles Krug established the first winery in his name. He not only pioneered European varietal plantings, but also fermentation techniques and the careful selection of root stocks. In the mid 1870s, the Beringers followed in his footsteps, establishing what would become the longest continuous winery in Napa. The Phylloxera crisis at the end of the century hit the region hard, and Krug had to file for bankruptcy. A year after his death in 1892, James Moffitt purchased the land and began replanting vines using the Phylloxera “cure” of graftings onto American roostock. The Beringers, meanwhile, were Read more »

  • Joseph Phelps Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Insignia 2006

    Snoothrank:

Wonderful wine that displays depth and power. The ink purple hue is.beautiful. The boque is very balanced...No big huge fruit up front on the nose. Just a balance of berry, and dark fruit. Wonderful front and mid patale....But it's the end palate that makes for this wine being special. The tannins are so balanced, and the finish goes on....... Read More

  • Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon California Blend 815 NV

    Snoothrank:

Solid cab under $30-$40. Was tough to drink more than 2 glasses without food. Cherry cola, licorice, spicy, raspberry, very oak'y - the flavors are pretty strong. Definitely decant for 1-2 hours minimum. Would probably pair well with a steak or short-ribs. Lamb too. Beef stroganoff maybe. Read More

  • Charter Oak Red Blend Napa Valley Guido Ragghianti Old World Field Blend 2010

    Snoothrank:

Light oak and dark fruit thats a bit inky come together on a spicy, smoky, toasty nose that shows a touch of sun dried tomato fruit. Plump and inky on the palate, this shows low and compressed in the mouth, with plenty of power in reserve, showing a nice touch of meaty, strawberry preserves and a little pencil lead on the tart, modest finish. Sh... Read More

  • Chase Family Cellars Hayne Vineyard Reserve Zinfandel Napa Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

Tight and fine on the nose, with shaved cedar French oak, tight dark woodsy fruit, and creamy blueberry pie top notes. This is bright, mineral and smooth in the mouth with a powerful if not terribly fruit-driven palate that shows fine complexity. This has power and depth with a faint edge of sweetness that's balanced out by the dark bitter hint ... Read More
