St. Helena is known as the “heart of the Napa Valley” wine region of California. Ironically, this thriving town built on the wine industry gets its name from the 1850s St. Helena Chapter (named for the mountain in the distance) of the Sons of Temperance, an organization dedicated to the reform and prevention of “drunkards.”

In 1861, German immigrant Charles Krug established the first winery in his name. He not only pioneered European varietal plantings, but also fermentation techniques and the careful selection of root stocks. In the mid 1870s, the Beringers followed in his footsteps, establishing what would become the longest continuous winery in Napa. The Phylloxera crisis at the end of the century hit the region hard, and Krug had to file for bankruptcy. A year after his death in 1892, James Moffitt purchased the land and began replanting vines using the Phylloxera “cure” of graftings onto American roostock. The Beringers, meanwhile, were Read more »

  • This Friday, in Napa:From from parker to pulse : a dizzying lineup of tor kenward's winesOur non-wine country friends would balk at the wine that doesn't get consumed around these parts. It is truly an embarrassment of riches, because sometimes one just cannot consume several half-full bottles of wine left over after a day of tasting. Most o... Read More

  • Sutter Home Winery Merlot Fre Non Alcoholic 2008

    Snoothrank:

Though Cab's not my personal favorite, this is spectacular. We've put off trying this for a long time because it goes for close to $20 round these parts. Loads of black cherry and spice aromas with a bit of tar, flavors of same but with a bright red cherry and blueberry finish, along with some smoke. My husband went wild for it and said it neede... • Boyanci Red Blend St. Helena 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is as close to Californian perfection as you can get. Big and bold. You can't taste the well integrated 14.9% alcohol, but it sure packs a punch. This must be eaten with a thick juicy steak. This can be a sipper but I highly recommend a huge food pairing. Enjoy it with a nice expensive cigar after dinner. Lots of black cherry and nutmeg. Th... Read More

  • Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 2005

    Snoothrank:

This bottle opened up with aromas of plum, raisin and chocolate. With time hints of sea air, chalk dust and undergrowth came forward, which added a great deal to its complexity. On the palate, I found black currants and cinnamon with a hint of green bell pepper, which led to a long rich dark chocolate covered cherry finish. Read More

  • Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Dragonfly 2006

    Snoothrank:

I've have yet to slay a dragon, but if one did, they should open a bottle of this wine to celebrate. Aromas of cherry wood, black currant, and fine tabacco. A euphoric plethora of colorful flavors producing the darkest of juices. Paired perfectly with a 23oz steak, au-gratin potatoes, and creamed spinach. And yes, it was my birthday. Read More

  • Charles Krug Zinfandel Port NV

    Snoothrank:

Smooth does not begin to describe this port. With mild oak and heavy body, this lot is aged just right to have no bite.A quiet evening, a few good friends, ear friendly music and a fine cigar is incomplete unless everyone is holding a glass of this perfect port. Read More
