St. Helena is known as the “heart of the Napa Valley” wine region of California. Ironically, this thriving town built on the wine industry gets its name from the 1850s St. Helena Chapter (named for the mountain in the distance) of the Sons of Temperance, an organization dedicated to the reform and prevention of “drunkards.”

In 1861, German immigrant Charles Krug established the first winery in his name. He not only pioneered European varietal plantings, but also fermentation techniques and the careful selection of root stocks. In the mid 1870s, the Beringers followed in his footsteps, establishing what would become the longest continuous winery in Napa. The Phylloxera crisis at the end of the century hit the region hard, and Krug had to file for bankruptcy. A year after his death in 1892, James Moffitt purchased the land and began replanting vines using the Phylloxera “cure” of graftings onto American roostock. The Beringers, meanwhile, were Read more »

  • Welcome to the Forum WW.  Of the wineries that you listed as tentative stops, the only one I have visited is Vincent Arroyo, and I certainly endorse your idea to visit them.  It definitely fits you goal of finding "off-beat wineries."  I had never heard of Jarvis (maybe I'm a troglodyte), but I visited their web site, and agree that they sound p... • Veedercrest Cabernet Sauvignon St. Helena Napa Valley 2006

    Snoothrank:

Big woody nose. Pleasant on introduction to the tongue, but nondescript. At the tip of the tongue it seems watery. It takes a while to get to the mid-palate and edges of the tongue before a carmelly, raisiny flavor is detected. "Carmelly, raisiny" would make one think this is an over-done "cooked" wine, but it is not. Everything here is pre... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Perfectly sweet, no bitterness or after taste. Very unique. Great with dark chocolate. A little pricey for my budget, however it was on sale for 25% off. Bought one bottle and had to have more. Went back to the store and bought the rest of the bottles for 25% off. Read More

  • Napa Cellars Zinfandel 2011

    Snoothrank:

A nice wine from Orin Swift. This is a blend of Zinfandel and a handful of other grapes. Had very nice undertones of earth and stone with some big fruit and a touch of residual sugar. Definitely a bold wine, and though we drank it without food, I suspect this would hold up well almost any type of beef. Again, not great but definitely not bad. Read More

  • Cult Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley By Salvestrin

    Snoothrank:

Bought this on a suggestion from the folks at total wine, and it has turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. I think there are much better cabs out there at a lower price. The nose has ripe fruit and slight licorice scents. The palate also has some muted fruit but is dominated by strong mushroom and earthy flavors. Less than medium comple... Read More
