St. Helena is known as the “heart of the Napa Valley” wine region of California. Ironically, this thriving town built on the wine industry gets its name from the 1850s St. Helena Chapter (named for the mountain in the distance) of the Sons of Temperance, an organization dedicated to the reform and prevention of “drunkards.”

The Phylloxera crisis at the end of the century hit the region hard, and Krug had to file for bankruptcy. A year after his death in 1892, James Moffitt purchased the land and began replanting vines using the Phylloxera “cure” of graftings onto American roostock. • Hall Jack's Masterpiece Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

    Snoothrank:

Roasty, oakey nose with light camphor. Rich red and black fruit, currant, wood on the palate with nice spice. Cinnamon and baking spice. Bright fruit that leans red. Nice structure. It has a pretty profile, but big wood influence. Good acidity, but the wood's a bit heavy handed. Time should improve for my taste.89 pts.5/9/13 at winery Read More

  • Buehler Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Very dark, somewhat murky color. Quite woody nose with a kind of leesy note. Very pleasant on the palate. It spreads over the tongue and imparts some blackberry/cassis flavors. Tannins are very will contained but are sufficient along with some acid to give good structure. US$16.99 at Costco a year ago. Read More

Starting off a bit hollow, this fills in in the glass, showing freshly crushed black currant and black cherry fruit supported by earthy and medicinal fl... Read More
