Further North but with a similar situation one finds the rather broad ranging Spring Mountain District. With cooler daytime temperatures than Mount Veeder, these slopes range with-in the same elevations but their positioning results in almost twice the annual rainfall of Mount Veeder. As the air in Napa Valley warms and is drawn to the north, warm, moist air is drawn through a gap in the Mayacamas Range resulting in regular, cooling rainfalls. Not actually a mountain, this region is more of a broad high pass that straddles this gap between the Mayacamas and Diamond Mountain. These same air flows often contribute to evening fogs in the valley floor to the East which results, counter-intuitively, in warmer evening temperatures at higher elevations as this blanket of cool, damp air forces the warmer air up the slopes and into the valleys of the district. The production of the Spring Mountain District is modest, contributing a mere 2% to the Napa valley Total. With soils similar to the volcanic, seafloor Read more »

Spring Mountain on Snooth

  • I ran up to Napa for a few days to get away and taste some wines from places ... the Silverado side. The 2008 Spring Mountain Cabernet was really nice! Next was Casa Nuestra, which I wanted to visit because they offer some different varietals not common in the valley.  Solid and enjoyable wines, but alas a mere 87 and 88 points.  Ha!  Nice dry... • Newton Vineyards the Puzzle Proprietary Red Spring Mountain District 2008

    Snoothrank:

Awesome Napa blend from Newton. First tried this at a tasting at Newton and thought this was the best of the lot. This blend varies every year depending on the quality of the individual grapes to be blended. This '08 is a well integrated blend of mainly merlot and cab sauv. Loads of dark fruit, medium tannins, nice acidity, lots of layers and a ... Read More

  • Terra Valentine Cabernet Spring Mountain 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite dark blacck plum color. Spicy, oaky nose. Initial mouth sensation is tartness. Then, Spring Mouhtain tannin takes over. Some cassis and black fruit flavors. Some bitterness in the back of the palate, However, the finish is very satisfying. No, I don't mean that its great now that I've swallowed it. This wine is opening up as I am s... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Lots of red and black currant on the nose with young wood and a touch of green herbaceousness. Flavors of blackberry with firm tannin, good acid and nice minerality. Nice and lingers on ripe fruit with good acid. 88 pts. 4/20/13 Read More

  • Smith Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

    Snoothrank:

Not a "blow you into the weeds powerhouse" California Cab. Also, this wine ... ... like other examples from Spring Mountain. This is a civilized wine that shows some berry/cassis/plum fruit, but not enough to be distractive. Seems closer to French style than California. US$29.68 at Total Wine Read More
