Further North but with a similar situation one finds the rather broad ranging Spring Mountain District. With cooler daytime temperatures than Mount Veeder, these slopes range with-in the same elevations but their positioning results in almost twice the annual rainfall of Mount Veeder. As the air in Napa Valley warms and is drawn to the north, warm, moist air is drawn through a gap in the Mayacamas Range resulting in regular, cooling rainfalls. Not actually a mountain, this region is more of a broad high pass that straddles this gap between the Mayacamas and Diamond Mountain. These same air flows often contribute to evening fogs in the valley floor to the East which results, counter-intuitively, in warmer evening temperatures at higher elevations as this blanket of cool, damp air forces the warmer air up the slopes and into the valleys of the district. The production of the Spring Mountain District is modest, contributing a mere 2% to the Napa valley Total. With soils similar to the volcanic, seafloor Read more »

  • Check it out. This is the first time I ever opened a bottle with one of ... ... visited this winery on Spring Mountain last May.  I was surprised I liked their white wines as much as I did.  This one is bone dry with lots of tart apple flavor.  Unfortunately, I could guzzle glass after glass of this on a hot day.  BTW, big time Santa Ana wind... • Terra Valentine Riesling Spring Mountain District 2011

    Snoothrank:

Fruity--apple, peach--and minerally nose. Nicely bone dry on the palate. However, then comes in some fruit--again apple. Boy this is the kind of wine you can really enjoy on a hot summer day. Slight tartness makes me crave it. US$36.00 at the winery in St. Helena, Read More

"Thick-looking" purple in the glass. Somewhat volatile nose, also some woody, ... ... cassis--than most Spring Mountain Cabernets. Also, not as much tannin as other Spring Mountain examples I have tried. Very nice tartness from acid makes this an easy drinker--not as big as most Napa Cabs, US$17.99 at Total Wine Read More

  • Back at ya, Kim.Thank you for the excellent list.  The good news is that I ... Valley Cabs come from the Spring Mountain District.  Of course, my opinion may be biased by the fact that the producers in this region, for the most part, are a tad more reasonable about their pricing. Of course, outstanding wines are made from other grape varieties ... • Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2005

    Snoothrank:

Very pretty plum color in the glass. A lot happening on the nose--berry, anise, menthol. Honest to gosh my first tongue sensation was bubble gum. Thankfully that dissipated quickly. I do still get some of those herbal things that were detected in the nose. A quite sturdy wine--from nice tannin and acid. A very good wine. $73.00 from the w... Read More
