Further North but with a similar situation one finds the rather broad ranging Spring Mountain District. With cooler daytime temperatures than Mount Veeder, these slopes range with-in the same elevations but their positioning results in almost twice the annual rainfall of Mount Veeder. As the air in Napa Valley warms and is drawn to the north, warm, moist air is drawn through a gap in the Mayacamas Range resulting in regular, cooling rainfalls. Not actually a mountain, this region is more of a broad high pass that straddles this gap between the Mayacamas and Diamond Mountain. These same air flows often contribute to evening fogs in the valley floor to the East which results, counter-intuitively, in warmer evening temperatures at higher elevations as this blanket of cool, damp air forces the warmer air up the slopes and into the valleys of the district. The production of the Spring Mountain District is modest, contributing a mere 2% to the Napa valley Total. With soils similar to the volcanic, seafloor Read more »

Spring Mountain on Snooth

  • Merlot is always a nice change of pace.....This 2012 Bougetz Cellars Spring Mountain Cab was pretty good. A tad fruit forward and a touch sweet, but surprisingly drinking very well for young Spring Mountain fruit. Blackfruit, spice, mocha, full body with a long finish. Looking forward my other 2 bottles.   Read More

  • Keenan Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

    Snoothrank:

Very beautiful dark plum color. Nose of dark fruit, earthiness. Terrific on the tongue. Nice suggestion of dried fruit on the tip of the tonguecassis, blueberry, and maybe, plum. Tannin does not hit until mid-palate. This wine is so easy to drink. It is very approachable now. While there is still tannin there, Im not sure there is enough ... Read More

  • Well, looky here.  Another wine-stained label.  How, ever does this ... ... plum.  Well-known Spring Mountain tannin does not pop up until mid- to rear-palate.  It is not obnoxious at all, it gives the wine character.  An excellent example of a reasonably priced (OK, "reasonable" is relative) Napa Cabernet Sauvignon that hits well above it's ... • Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2005

    Snoothrank:

Nose is of olive and Indian spices. Whoa! A tannic beast. Definitely the antonym of a spoofed, fruit-forward Napa Cab. Quite light on the dark currant fruit, but then the tannin really smacks you. Vininess mid-palate. Really unfortunate bitterness on the rear palate. I think thats from the tannin. Read More

  • Spring Mountain Elivette Red 2003

    Snoothrank:

Beautiful Spring Mtn. Vineyard cab blend (88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc). The perfume nose consists of cocoa powder and ripe raspberry. There's a tongue coating presence of red plum, raspberry, black licorice and tamarind balanced by prominent but fine grained tannin, medium (-) acidity, and a long finish. Read More
