Further North but with a similar situation one finds the rather broad ranging Spring Mountain District. With cooler daytime temperatures than Mount Veeder, these slopes range with-in the same elevations but their positioning results in almost twice the annual rainfall of Mount Veeder. As the air in Napa Valley warms and is drawn to the north, warm, moist air is drawn through a gap in the Mayacamas Range resulting in regular, cooling rainfalls. Not actually a mountain, this region is more of a broad high pass that straddles this gap between the Mayacamas and Diamond Mountain. These same air flows often contribute to evening fogs in the valley floor to the East which results, counter-intuitively, in warmer evening temperatures at higher elevations as this blanket of cool, damp air forces the warmer air up the slopes and into the valleys of the district. The production of the Spring Mountain District is modest, contributing a mere 2% to the Napa valley Total. With soils similar to the volcanic, seafloor Read more »

Spring Mountain on Snooth

  • Day 3, just when you thought it couldn't get any better. Yesterday was ... day was at our wine club - Spring Mountain Vineyards. Our host Rick met us at the yellow cabin with a big smile and glasses of their '13 sauv blanc, which is blended with a bit of semillon. Aged a few months in neutral barrels, this SB is really nice, more melon and meye... Read More

  • Robert Keenan Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2005

    Snoothrank:

Nose is of olive and Indian spices. Whoa! A tannic beast. Definitely the antonym of a spoofed, fruit-forward Napa Cab. Quite light on the dark currant fruit, but then the tannin really smacks you. Vininess mid-palate. Really unfortunate bitterness on the rear palate. I think thats from the tannin. Read More

  • Spring Mountain Elivette Red 2003

    Snoothrank:

Beautiful Spring Mtn. Vineyard cab blend (88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc). The perfume nose consists of cocoa powder and ripe raspberry. There's a tongue coating presence of red plum, raspberry, black licorice and tamarind balanced by prominent but fine grained tannin, medium (-) acidity, and a long finish. Read More

  • Smith Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

    Snoothrank:

A nose of forest floorstrong suggestion of olive. On the tongue a nice, subtle ... tannin. My experience with Spring Mountain cabs is that they are tannic monsters. Some earthiness. While this is a firm, full-bodied wine, it is not causing my mouth and tongue to pucker to a prune. Nice acid level balances out the wine. Very pleasant after... Read More

  • Ok, I've off-loaded the grand kids and we've been home for perhaps 25 ... it's a very nice 2008 Spring Mountain Vineyard cab from Napa.  You know what?  It tastes most excellent.  Am I the first to open my bottle?  Nope.  Hey, wait a minute.   I'm off to Cuba in a few days - someone might break into my house and steal it.  Yes, that's right.  ...
