Spring Mountain District Wine


The Spring Mountain AVA is located within Napa Valley in California’s North Coast. The region is distinctly cooler than most Napa districts nearer to the valley floor, with vineyards located into the slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains. 
The first vineyard, La Perla Cellar, was planted in 1873 by Charles Lemme. This was followed in 1885 by Jacob and Frederick Beringer, who planted what became Beringer Flat. Others followed, some producing wines that went on to win national and international awards. 
As with most other districts in California, Phylloxera and Prohibition took their toll into the 20th century, and many wineries were forced to shut down and produce other crops to survive. Then in 1946, Eleanor and Fred McCrea established Stony Hill Viineyard and this lead others to follow their lead and slowly rebuild the wine region. AVA status was granted in 1991.
