Spring Mountain District Wine

The Spring Mountain AVA is located within Napa Valley in California’s North Coast. The region is distinctly cooler than most Napa districts nearer to the valley floor, with vineyards located into the slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.

The first vineyard, La Perla Cellar, was planted in 1873 by Charles Lemme. This was followed in 1885 by Jacob and Frederick Beringer, who planted what became Beringer Flat. Others followed, some producing wines that went on to win national and international awards.

As with most other districts in California, Phylloxera and Prohibition took their toll into the 20th century, and many wineries were forced to shut down and produce other crops to survive. Then in 1946, Eleanor and Fred McCrea established Stony Hill Viineyard and this lead others to follow their lead and slowly rebuild the wine region. AVA status was granted in 1991.

Spring Mountain is known primarily for its robust red wines from Cabernet Read more »

  • Chateau Chevalier Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2005

    Snoothrank:

Full bodied spring mountain vino at an excellent price. A favorite staple of ours. Let decant for an hour or so. Also, be sure to pour slowly as this has quite a bit of sediment. Read More

  • Robert Keenan Winery Chardonnay Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very fruity--peach, tropical, maybe some lemon--on the nose. Fruit pops up, immediately, in the mouth, then some oak, with the dreaded butter, but that quickly diminishes. Nice acid pops up which makes this wine quite refreshing. A little something bitter at the back of the throar, but the finish, overall, is quite satisfying. Read More

  • Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District Lot 121 2006

    Snoothrank:

Color is great and on the nose I pick up hints of cherry and an earthy aroma way in the background. Keep swirling and other notes of dark fruits appear and then disappear. On the palate there is cherry and plum and a very subtle sort of sweetness which is interesting. The finish is somewhat short and not typical of a spring mountain cab. This is... Read More

  • Philip Togni Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2009

    Snoothrank:

Philip Togni makes some of Napa's most elegant Cabernet Sauvignon. This is mountain fruit, so there is a fine dance between the generous fruit and the ripe tannins and supporting acidity. It's quite a waltz. Read More

  • Ritchie Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 1983

    Snoothrank:

The nose here is a touch subtle with minty top notes and a touch of sage accenting the black currant fruit flecked with notes of cured olives, smoke and minerals. In the mouth this is still very much alive with olive. Ores early on followed by a vibrant midpate full of black. Urrant and black raspberry fruit supported by juicy acidity. The tanni... Read More

  • Robert Keenan Winery Merlot Napa Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Slight volatile acid on the nose. Not much fruit hints. Something of a fungus hint. Fruit emerges on the tip of the tongue--and a strange "sweetness" (not like sugar and not from alcohol) around the mid-tongue. Some tannin, but not anything big. Pretty easy to drink, today, but I really don't think this is a layer-downer. I'm a little supr... Read More

  • Schweiger Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2006

    Snoothrank:

Decanted for 1hour and 15 minutes. Pours a deep dark inky violet color. Big nose of dark berries, mocha, vanilla, chocolate and cedar. Starts off with ample amounts of dark cherry and raspberry flavors. In the middle the rich luscious berries are mixed with smooth chocolate, vanilla and mocha flavors. On the back end, there is some nice ced... Read More

  • Cain Vineyard & Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Napa Valley Cain Five 2004

    Snoothrank:

A lovely wine that i thought was going to be full, bold, and round and although it has those qualities it comes off against a mineral backdrop: like liking a slate rubbed with brambly fruit, a little watery, but full of dark floral, slightly chocolatey (?) and plump fruit as it passing to the finish. :) Read More

  • Schweiger Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District Dedication 2004

    Snoothrank:

Nice right out of the bottle but really shines with a good decanting or a couple hours of air. Schweiger always has good juice for a relatively good price. Read More
