Spring Mountain District Wine

The Spring Mountain AVA is located within Napa Valley in California’s North Coast. The region is distinctly cooler than most Napa districts nearer to the valley floor, with vineyards located into the slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.

The first vineyard, La Perla Cellar, was planted in 1873 by Charles Lemme. This was followed in 1885 by Jacob and Frederick Beringer, who planted what became Beringer Flat. Others followed, some producing wines that went on to win national and international awards.

As with most other districts in California, Phylloxera and Prohibition took their toll into the 20th century, and many wineries were forced to shut down and produce other crops to survive. Then in 1946, Eleanor and Fred McCrea established Stony Hill Viineyard and this lead others to follow their lead and slowly rebuild the wine region. AVA status was granted in 1991.

Spring Mountain is known primarily for its robust red wines from Cabernet Read more »

  • Robert Keenan Reserve Merlot Spring Mountain District 2000

    Snoothrank:

Some flowery aromas, some oaky bouquet. Very gerntle on the tip of the tongue--velvety with some sweet sensations. Raspberry fruit flavors, but that is only on the tip of the tongue. As the wine passes through the palate some very civilized tannins appear. Good balance from acid.. A very smooth wine that is easy to enjoy now, and might, pos... Read More

  • Newton Vineyards the Puzzle Proprietary Red Spring Mountain District 2008

    Snoothrank:

Awesome Napa blend from Newton. First tried this at a tasting at Newton and thought this was the best of the lot. This blend varies every year depending on the quality of the individual grapes to be blended. This '08 is a well integrated blend of mainly merlot and cab sauv. Loads of dark fruit, medium tannins, nice acidity, lots of layers and a ... Read More

  • Terra Valentine Cabernet Spring Mountain 2009

    Snoothrank:

Quite dark blacck plum color. Spicy, oaky nose. Initial mouth sensation is tartness. Then, Spring Mouhtain tannin takes over. Some cassis and black fruit flavors. Some bitterness in the back of the palate, However, the finish is very satisfying. No, I don't mean that its great now that I've swallowed it. This wine is opening up as I am s... Read More

  • Terra Valentine Cabernet Spring Mountain 2009

    Snoothrank:

Lots of red and black currant on the nose with young wood and a touch of green herbaceousness. Flavors of blackberry with firm tannin, good acid and nice minerality. Nice and lingers on ripe fruit with good acid. 88 pts. 4/20/13 Read More

  • Smith Madrone Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

    Snoothrank:

Not a "blow you into the weeds powerhouse" California Cab. Also, this wine does not blow me over with tannin like other examples from Spring Mountain. This is a civilized wine that shows some berry/cassis/plum fruit, but not enough to be distractive. Seems closer to French style than California. US$29.68 at Total Wines. Read More
