Spring Mountain District Wine

The Spring Mountain AVA is located within Napa Valley in California’s North Coast. The region is distinctly cooler than most Napa districts nearer to the valley floor, with vineyards located into the slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.
The first vineyard, La Perla Cellar, was planted in 1873 by Charles Lemme. This was followed in 1885 by Jacob and Frederick Beringer, who planted what became Beringer Flat. Others followed, some producing wines that went on to win national and international awards.
As with most other districts in California, Phylloxera and Prohibition took their toll into the 20th century, and many wineries were forced to shut down and produce other crops to survive. Then in 1946, Eleanor and Fred McCrea established Stony Hill Viineyard and this lead others to follow their lead and slowly rebuild the wine region. AVA status was granted in 1991.
Spring Mountain is known primarily for its robust red wines from Cabernet Read more »

  • Keenan Winery and Vineyards is recognized as a pioneering vineyard of the Spring Mountain District; Peter Conradi planted vineyards there in the late 19th century; in 1974, Robert Keenan, Michael Keenan's father, purchased 180 forested acres, including the original 100-acre site of the old Conradi vineyard. Robert re-planted with rows of Chardon... Read More

  • Terra Valentine Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District Yverdon 2008

Nice dark ruby color. Pleasant nose of dark fruits/berries. Very pleasant introduction on the tonguetypical cabernet sauvignon flavors of black currant. Maybe just a tad sweeter than normal, but that passes as soon as the wine leaves the tip of the tongue. The thing that I find surprising about this wine is the very tame tannin. My experien... • Keenan Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain District 35th Anniversary 2011

Beautiful dark purple color. Rustic woody nose, but, also, a hint of alcohol. On entry lots of dried fruit flavorraisins and prunes, but without the sweetness. Some of that road tar sensation. This, to me, brings in complexity after the fruity entry. Pretty serious unresolved tannins. I dont discount a wine just because of tannin. Tannin ... Read More
