Spring Mountain District Wine

The Spring Mountain AVA is located within Napa Valley in California’s North Coast. The region is distinctly cooler than most Napa districts nearer to the valley floor, with vineyards located into the slopes of the Mayacamas Mountains.

The first vineyard, La Perla Cellar, was planted in 1873 by Charles Lemme. This was followed in 1885 by Jacob and Frederick Beringer, who planted what became Beringer Flat. Others followed, some producing wines that went on to win national and international awards.

As with most other districts in California, Phylloxera and Prohibition took their toll into the 20th century, and many wineries were forced to shut down and produce other crops to survive. Then in 1946, Eleanor and Fred McCrea established Stony Hill Viineyard and this lead others to follow their lead and slowly rebuild the wine region. AVA status was granted in 1991.

Spring Mountain is known primarily for its robust red wines from Cabernet Read more »

  • Keenan Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain Estate 2008

    Snoothrank:

Very much a musty/viney nose. On the tongue you know this one is a brute. What black fruit may be detected by the tip of the tongue is there is swept away by earthiness and tobacco or dark chocolate flavors as the wine passes farther along the tongue and palate. Pair this one with your biggest beef roast meals. Read More

Quite darkalmost PS darkin the glass. Something of a minty/flowery nose, but, then, some barnyard hints. Unobtrusive on introduction to the palate and tongue. Some currant or blackberry, some stone fruit, some mint. Still fairly tannic. Very nice acid. Read More

  • Thank you for the link, John.  Very interesting. Her comments about losing the Long Vineyard Chardonnay intrigues me.  OT has turned me into a historic vineyard bigot.  So, my initial response to the removal of old vines is repulsion.  On the other hand, is Pritchard Hill the right place for Chardonnay?  Pritchard Hill is now considered primo Cab... • York Creek Vineyards Cabernet Franc Spring Mountain District 2007

    Snoothrank:

Lacks the body I had come to expect from a Cab, even a Franc. Bouquet deepens with time though, as well as the taste; 45 minutes or more. Blended fruits leave a pleasant after taste albeit of short/moderate duration. Read More
