Rutherford occupies the heart of the Napa Valley floor. Roughly square shaped the area is at the crossroads of the valley, benefitting from some maritime influence and fog yet enjoying moderately warm average daily temperatures. There are distinct differences however between the Eastern and Western halves of the AVA. In the west the valley floor is shaded by the Mayacamas range, resulting in cooler afternoon temperatures as well as less fog in the morning. The soil here is predominantly volcanic runoff from the mountains. In contrast the Eastern side of the Read more »

  • Tres Sabores Rutherford Perspective Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

Tight on the nose with gentle suggestions of flowers, sweet mint and subtle toasted oak spice. Smooth, rich and polished in the mouth with a supple, slightly chewy feel to it. The fruit is generous and fills the palate with crushed blackberry and black currant flavors but this comes off as a touch simple with jammy and candied licorice tones on ... Read More

  • Quickfire Top Chef Napa Cabernet 2009

Tight and low on the nose with subtle aromas of milk chocolate and dried herbs adding detail to the vanilla and sweet black cherry core on the nose. The oak is well used here but does lend a notable baking spice quality, toasty and sweet to the nose. Rather cool and focused in the mouth, deep with fine acids and polished tannins supporting subtl... Read More

  • Sullivan Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Napa Valley 2010

Very fine layered aromas of violets, mint, integrated wood spice, black currants and a very fine hint of bell pepper greets the nose. Tight and reticent in the mouth, this does show great balance and good freshness to the fruit with the oak playing a lovely supporting role but the wine remains rather tightly coiled on the palate. The balance is ... Read More
