Rutherford occupies the heart of the Napa Valley floor. Roughly square shaped the area is at the crossroads of the valley, benefitting from some maritime influence and fog yet enjoying moderately warm average daily temperatures. There are distinct differences however between the Eastern and Western halves of the AVA. In the west the valley floor is shaded by the Mayacamas range, resulting in cooler afternoon temperatures as well as less fog in the morning. The soil here is predominantly volcanic runoff from the mountains. In contrast the Eastern side of the Read more »

  • I've been anxious to try some Windy Oaks NG I'm noticing a lot of ... ... that with a '14 Apsara Rutherford Sauv Blanc which sported sweet fruit, lychee and lemon curd. Of course we needed a red with the meat. This '11 Carlisle Grand Noir was a lot of fun. Deep dark fruit, middling texture and zippy acidity made it a hit with the steaks. Grand... Read More

Outstanding Merlot! Big and lush with ripe fruit and big alcohol. Fantastic smoothness with some very good structure. This would give Duckhorn or Shafer Merlots a run for their money. This is another example of Merlot done the right way! Cheers! Read More

  • Apsara Sauvignon Blanc Rivers Reach 2014

Very pretty clear yellow color. Lots of fresh fruit aromas, but its hard to pin anything down. On the tongue, it is nice to get just a hint of grapefruit instead of that full-on, in-your-face blast that so many SBs seem to have these days. Also, some melon flavor. Some grassiness. Very restrained on the acidspeaks to the control of the grap... Read More

  • Emmolo Napa Valley Merlot 2012

Another one from lunch at Marcello's. The Winemaker's notes on seem spot on to me. 'This well-balanced and darkly colored wine evokes the scents of saddle leather, coffee and plum, with traces of smokiness amidst its rich fruit. A smooth entry on the palate leads into ripe flavors of plums, prunes and cocoa, balanced by acidity and a gr... Read More
