Just to the south of St. Helena lies Rutherford, the historic home to the old Inglenook estate and Beaulieu Vineyards and arguably the greatest spot in the country to grow Cabernet Sauvignon, though I will argue with this proposition in just a minute. Rutherford has even spawned perhaps America’s only contribution to the lexicon of wine tasting, the mysterious “Rutherford dust”, that dusty, dusky note that can merge in old California Cabernet. Rutherford occupies the heart of the Napa Valley floor. Roughly square shaped the area is at the crossroads of the valley, benefitting from some maritime influence and fog yet enjoying moderately warm average daily temperatures. There are distinct differences however between the Eastern and Western halves of the AVA. In the west the valley floor is shaded by the Mayacamas range, resulting in cooler afternoon temperatures as well as less fog in the morning. The soil here is predominantly volcanic runoff from the mountains. In contrast the Eastern side of the Read more »

What a great vintage and what a fine wine. Really enjoyed this wine. Dark dark color, sexy and sleek. The nose is full of dark fruits and currents. • Tres Sabores Rutherford Perspective Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

    Snoothrank:

Tight on the nose with gentle suggestions of flowers, sweet mint and subtle toasted oak spice. Smooth, rich and polished in the mouth with a supple, slightly chewy feel to it. The fruit is generous and fills the palate with crushed blackberry and black currant flavors but this comes off as a touch simple with jammy and candied licorice tones on ... Read More

  • Sullivan Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

Very fine layered aromas of violets, mint, integrated wood spice, black currants and a very fine hint of bell pepper greets the nose. Tight and reticent in the mouth, this does show great balance and good freshness to the fruit with the oak playing a lovely supporting role but the wine remains rather tightly coiled on the palate. The balance is ... Read More

  • Gwen, I agree that the BV Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon is a good wine--and 2010 is an excellent vintage year.  So, you can't hardly go wrong with your choice.Darren is a recent Snoother, and he has made some excellent suggestions regarding Italian wines.  I am a California bigot, but there is no denying the greatness if Italian wines--both in j...
