Directly to the North Of Los Carneros and veering off to the Northwest for some 13 miles as it follows both the Mayacamas range and the boundary with Sonoma is the Mount Veeder AVA. It is here that one finds the steepest, most challenging vineyards in Napa Valley. Based as it is around the slopes of a long dormant Volcano, Mt. Veeder's soil is composed of decomposed basalt and compact ash as well as sandstone and shale at the lower elevations. With almost 3 feet of rail annually, these porous soils are one of the elements that distinguish this AVA, no to mention making it even more challenging to establish a vineyard here. The high elevation, ranging from 600 to 2300 ft, keeps the vineyards out of the reach of the San Pablo bay fog and results in temperatures that are moderate for the region. This combination of factors creates some stern, structured wines but with beautifully complex fruit. Cabernet and Chardonnay long have been the grapes of note from Mt. Veeder, with the Chardonnays retaining bright Read more »

  • Mount Veeder Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2006

Very dark and attractive in the glass. "Hefty" nose--earthy with hints of spice. Very nice on the palate. The texture seems satiny smooth. Some cassis and peppercorn flavors. Tannins appear to have been tamed. Nice acid. This looks like a good food wine. US$27.99 at Total Wine in 2010. Read More

  • Mount Veeder Winery Napa Valley Cabernet 2009

Opaque and showing a little age. This is smoky and grilled beefy on the nose with a nice combination of sweet black plum and blackcurrant fruit, smoky herbs, soil tones and vanilla oak. A little tight still in the mouth with tannins that are softly austere supporting a rich, savory core of fruit. There's still a lot of mineral earth and some wo... Read More

  • Here's the link ... Mountain, Diamond MOuntain, Mount Veeder and (coming soon!) Pritchard Hill sub AVAs are all hilly/mountainous.  No guarantee, but I find the wines from those areas more to my liking.  Rutherford can mean valley floor, rolling areas on the eastern edge like George III vineyard are better than those that border Rte. 29.  Read More
