Carneros Wine

Los Carneros- The first AVA one comes to as one splits off the Napa Vallejo Highway and takes route 29 towards the City of Napa from the south is Los Carneros. Reaching from close to the southern border of the county to the southwestern edge of the City, Carneros was the first AVA to be determined solely by climate. It has the unusual honor of spanning across the southern reaches of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The climate here is cool, think summer in San Francisco, and while the average rainfall is the lowest in Napa Valley it can be a humid region due the fog that rolls in off the bay. These conditions are ideal for the so-called cool climate grapes of Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rule the roost here yielding ripe yet balanced wines with fresh acidity and a round, friendly feel. Merlot is a distant third, though the cool, crisp quality of the fruit can produce attractively elegant examples and an excellent structural component for blending. Los Carneros is a source of successful sparking Read more »

  • Problem isn't PN, Greg, you poor confused soul. Problem is the common ... ... from the cool part of Napa (Carneros) that had as a kicker that it was great with lobster rolls (??!!). Yeah, if you like coke with your lobster, which is one of the TNs mentioned in the circular ("this is a silky-smooth, cola and raspberry bowl of juicy goodness"). ... Read More

  • Patz & Hall Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard 2012

Lots of apple and melon aromatics. Similar flavors hit the tongue on introduction. The wine does evolve as it passes back. Some hints of mineral mid-palate. Good citric acid mid- to back-palate. Controlled use of oakyou can detect the complexity that it adds, but this is no butter-bomb. Read More

  • Carneros is at the SanFranBay end of Napa Valley, Al. It's a smaller, more-defined appellation than 'Napa Valley', of which it is a subset, so it's generally more expensive because of that.Won't be so much of a problem, Mark, when MS has shrunk to complete obscurity, which will likely happen well within our lifetimes.Wonder how much control we'l... • Aspara Syrah Carneros las Madres Vineyard 2013

Opened from my vault and let a glass sit for about a half-hour before tasting. Viney or herbaceous nose. However, as the wine warms up a bit Im starting to get a cocoa or mocha thing. A bit stark on entry. Light hit of various red-fruit flavorsred plum, red cherry. Something of a hint of coffee or, maybe, nuttiness around the edge of the to... Read More

  • Arger-Martucci Syrah Carneros 2008

The wine is a deep purple color at the center leading to a bright garnet color along the edges with just a hint of opacity. The nose is quite nice, ripe black fruits and anise transition to some wonderful mineral notes. The taste is very pleasant with some nice blackberry and cherry cola notes at the outset that transition to some lovely dark ... Read More

  • Robert Mondavi Winery Pinot Noir California Coastal 2011

A decent table wine. A little sharp, which you'd expect from this price wine, but the flavor is very bright and soft. I was given this at a museum function. I would like to serve it with a sharp cheddar or bold bleu some evening hanging out with friends. Read More
