Carneros Wine

Los Carneros- The first AVA one comes to as one splits off the Napa Vallejo Highway and takes route 29 towards the City of Napa from the south is Los Carneros. Reaching from close to the southern border of the county to the southwestern edge of the City, Carneros was the first AVA to be determined solely by climate. It has the unusual honor of spanning across the southern reaches of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The climate here is cool, think summer in San Francisco, and while the average rainfall is the lowest in Napa Valley it can be a humid region due the fog that rolls in off the bay. These conditions are ideal for the so-called cool climate grapes of Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rule the roost here yielding ripe yet balanced wines with fresh acidity and a round, friendly feel. Merlot is a distant third, though the cool, crisp quality of the fruit can produce attractively elegant examples and an excellent structural component for blending. Los Carneros is a source of successful sparking Read more »

  • Patz & Hall Hudson Vineyard Chardonnay 2012

Tropical fruitkiwi, papayaand, maybe, stone fruit on the tip of the tongue. Stone or slate mid-palate. Light touch of oak. Refreshing tartness. Read More

  • Dalia Ceja la Tapatia Chardonnay Carneros 2013

A Naked Wines Selection, but a knock-out. Pale golden yellow in the glass. Opens with a load of Vanilla/Jasmine/Hibiscus, then Blueberry/Vanilla/Cola, and finally, Toffee & Cream on the nose. Most of this moves on to the palate, but after that, some grapefruit and lemon cream. More Oak/Butter/Vanilla than Fruit, but well balanced. Big and full ... Read More

  • Ryme Cellars Vermentino 'His' las Brisas Vineyard Vermentino Carneros. California 2014

The color is very much on the peach side. The nose is over ripe orange/tangerine. The flavors also come out as ripe tangerine, ripe pineapple and orange soda. We only have one bottle so I'll look for others to add their impressions. Seems to be in line with my notes from the 2013 vintage. Read More

  • Bedrock Hudson Vineyard South T 'N' S Block Syrah 2012

Big nose of dark berries. Yup, on the tongue, strong blackberry, but without sweetness. So, while I detect fruit on introduction this is not a fruit bomb. Rustic earthiness tames the berries. Gripping tannin and acid. Some tannic bitterness on the back of the palate, but Im certainly not going to kick this one out of bed for eating crackers. Read More

  • Patz and Hall Pinot Noir Carneros Hyde Vineyard 2011

Clear, transparent cherry color. Delicate slight red berry aromas. Quite delicate on the tongue. Some hint of cherry fruit, but, make no mistake this is winenot cough syrup. So, Meiomi lovers need not apply. Maybe some bitter chocolate, some tar. Good refreshing acid. Pretty sophisticated wine. Read More
