Carneros Wine

Los Carneros- The first AVA one comes to as one splits off the Napa Vallejo Highway and takes route 29 towards the City of Napa from the south is Los Carneros. Reaching from close to the southern border of the county to the southwestern edge of the City, Carneros was the first AVA to be determined solely by climate. It has the unusual honor of spanning across the southern reaches of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The climate here is cool, think summer in San Francisco, and while the average rainfall is the lowest in Napa Valley it can be a humid region due the fog that rolls in off the bay. These conditions are ideal for the so-called cool climate grapes of Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rule the roost here yielding ripe yet balanced wines with fresh acidity and a round, friendly feel. Merlot is a distant third, though the cool, crisp quality of the fruit can produce attractively elegant examples and an excellent structural component for blending. • Ryme Cellars Vermentino 'His' las Brisas Vineyard Vermentino Carneros. California 2013

    Snoothrank:

Really, really nice Carneros vermentino from Ryme Cellars. I get some apricot on the nose and then butterscotch candy and dried apricot on the palate. Gold in color from extended skin contact but not heavy. Slightly more round and savory than bright or acidic. Read More

  • Patz & Hall Hyde Vineyard Chardonnay Carneros 2011

    Snoothrank:

Very warm and pleasant aromas of orange blossom, lemon, honey and baked apple with a coating of caramel and vanilla. The palate has a lot of lemon zest on it, full of fresh acidity and well-integrated oak and toast paired with lemon, fresh peach and apricot, grapefruit and a long finish of yeasty creamy oak. • Schug Chardonnay Carneros 2013

    Snoothrank:

Elegant, full aromas of honeyed baked apple and cream with dried apricot and a hint of pineapple. Flavors are clean and lively, with just enough acidity to buoy the fruit and enough complexity to draw out ripe melon, lemon zest, clementine, apple and a nice long finish touched with butter and lemon. • Must have been a friends over kind of weekend.  Had a chardonnay evening, ... ... from Chablis, Burgundy, Carneros, Sonoma and Russian River.  Very interesting all the different flavor profiles coming from the same grape.  My favorite was the Auteur (hints of coconut, banana and pineapple) followed by the Beaujolais Blanc and Chablis. For fun ... • Bouchaine Pinot Noir Bacchus Collection Mariafeld 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very nice Carneros Pinot. More on the red cherry vs black cherry side, medium acidity, nice body and balance. This is a touch lighter than the Russisan River Pinot we had earlier but it doesn't have quite the bite of acidity either. Read More
