Carneros Wine

Los Carneros- The first AVA one comes to as one splits off the Napa Vallejo Highway and takes route 29 towards the City of Napa from the south is Los Carneros. Reaching from close to the southern border of the county to the southwestern edge of the City, Carneros was the first AVA to be determined solely by climate. It has the unusual honor of spanning across the southern reaches of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The climate here is cool, think summer in San Francisco, and while the average rainfall is the lowest in Napa Valley it can be a humid region due the fog that rolls in off the bay. These conditions are ideal for the so-called cool climate grapes of Burgundy. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rule the roost here yielding ripe yet balanced wines with fresh acidity and a round, friendly feel. Merlot is a distant third, though the cool, crisp quality of the fruit can produce attractively elegant examples and an excellent structural component for blending. • Abrente Napa Valley Albarino 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fairly fruity and floral nose--melon and fruit blossoms--makes me think a bit of Viognier or something like that. Not terribly flavorful entry. It's not until the wine moves to mid-palate/tongue that I first detect some mineral flavors and then various fruit flavors--melon, peach--and then some serious tartness. A very light wine that is very... Read More

  • Imagery Estate Winery White Burgundy Carneros Napa County 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very fruity/floral nose -- melons and green apples w orange blossoms. Similar fruit flavors on the palate with some hints of lemon. The apple/lemon descriptors show the acid backbone. Very light sipping wine that will be great on the patio in the summer. US$30.00 from the winery's club Read More

  • Big Vine Chardonnay Carneros 2010

    Snoothrank:

Starts with a bit of fizziness, rather silky mouth feel , lemon/lime, then unripe, but not unpleasant, pear, no oak and bracing. I had it without food, but probably much better with something rich and buttery. Read More
