The Carneros AVA straddles between both Napa and Sonoma Valleys, with distinct climates. The Napa side is warmer, more suited to varietals such as Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot, while the Sonoma side is cooler, where Pinot Noir and Chardonnay can thrive.

The history of wine-making in Carneros dates back to the 1840s, when California was still under Mexican control and General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who was also the Director of Colonization of the Northern Frontier, secured a land grant to settle and cultivate Rincon de los Carneros and surrounding territories. This section was managed by his son-in-law, Jacob P. Leese. Grape cultivation began with Leese and as the US gained control over California, more settlers became attracted to the fertile land in Sonoma and Napa Valleys and planted their own vineyards. By the 1870s, William H. Winter purchased 1,200 acres from Leese and cultivated what became the area’s first commercial vineyard, Winter Winery.

In 1881, Winter Winery was sold to James Read more »

  • Etude Pinot Noir Carneros Napa Valley Signature Series 2006

    Snoothrank:

Had this at a trendy steakhouse in Boston (KO Prime). Very solid Pinot that held up well to a very nice hanger Steak. 3.5 on the wine but down to 3 by the price as despite being a good wine it's not one I'd chase down to have a few bottles at home. Read More

  • Cuvaison 2008

    Snoothrank:

It's an excellent pairing for a rich fish such as a lightly grilled King Salmon, not too buttery or oaky. Crisp citrus without being too fruity. Initial bouquet that is evocative of the hot stones on the hillsides above San Tropez and a length of finish that is light and tantalizing and elegant. Read More

  • Park Lane Winery Los Carneros Chardonnay 2006

    Snoothrank:

Somewhat oakey nose of stony fruits. Some hints on the palate of banana and perhaps even some lychee, laced throughout with a nice toasty oak. Nice for a value chardonnay from Carneros. Read More

  • Castle 2006

    Snoothrank:

A great color but light. Actually carries a bigger body than the color exudes. Has a great dirty fruit aroma. Having it with strawberrys and gouda cheese and it is working out wonderfully. It has a nice bit of mineral to finish it out. Stawberry and acid make a nice balance. The finish is perfect. Read More

  • Etude Pinot Noir Carneros Napa Valley Signature Series 2006

    Snoothrank:

Bright cherry and earth notes on the nose with a little peppery and spice on the palate. Dark fruits and blackberries start to appear as the taste lingers, an edgier finish with the tannins present, needs a little more time but very elegant Read More
