The To-Kalon vineyard has been responsible for some of the most profound wines ever to emerge from Napa Valley. Long the heart of the famed Mondavi Cabernet Reserve, the vineyard’s fruit is prized to this day. Slightly cooler than Rutherford, yet warmer than Yountville, Oakville has nearly ideal conditions for viticulture. The soil here is much like that of Rutherford’s with slight differences from east to west though the alluvial deposits tend to be a bit finer here. There are gravely ridges throughout the AVA offering excellent drainage for the Valley floor. The terrain here is more varied than that of Rutherford, with vineyards creeping up the bench lands Read more »

  • Nickel & Nickel Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville John C. Sullenger Vineyard 1999

Had this last night with some friends for New Years Eve dinner. So, I'm, pretty much, going from memory, here. This seemed to be an uncomplicated wine. Some fruit at the tip of the tongue. Very mild tannin and acid. Not terribly complex. OK, but not great. This one may be a bit past its peak. Read More

  • Pine Ridge Winery Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Big nose showing off oak with coffee-like hints, but, also something sweet smellingmaybe, mint. Lots of very ripe currant fruit on the tip of the tongue. Very fruity noselots of tropical fruits and some lemon. Initial taste verifies thatsomething like pineapple and kiwi fruit, but there is a lemony acid kick towards the back of the palate. Also, towards the back of the palate, there is a definite effervescent sensation. Good wine. Read More
