for this region?

The climate of this appellation is unique, partly because its elevation frees it from the fog which blankets the valley below in the afternoon. Also, since it faces west, the region benefits from extended, direct afternoon sunlight. The soils are volcanic and porous, contributing greatly to radiant cooling. The temperature can drop as much as 30°F in the afternoon, allowing grapes to maintain good acidity. Zinfandel is emerging as the best varietal for the appellation’s growing conditions. However, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese are also planted here. Located on the western slope of the Vaca Mountains, northeast of the city of Napa, this AVA has over 1,500 acres of vines in a region of 11,000 acres. Grapes have been grown within the region for well over 100 years. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • But most Cali Sangio seems to be grown in the wrong place.  I used to date ... where Antinori thought that Atlas Peak would be good for Sangiovese for the same reason? Now if you go down to Paso and chat with Mike Caparone, you will come out of that conversation believing that Tuscany is the wrong place to grow Sangiovese.  Go figure.  (OK, I'm ... • BTW, Antinori bought some property on Atlas Peak with the idea he could grow Sangio there.  Didn't work very well, so they grafted over to, what else, Cab.  Atlas Peak generally hasn't carried the same weight as Howell, Veeder, Spring, Diamond and the other "mountain" sub-AVAs. Next big AVA will be Coombsville, where Meteor hails from.  It regul... Read More

  • Not too long ago, I tasted the reserve wines at William Hill on Atlas Peak in Napa.  And the wine that impressed me the most was the Petite Verdot.  My suspicion is that, as Cab gets overripe in a lot of Napa locations these days, Petite Verdot will actually be drinkable as the majority grape in the wine.  (Oddly, they also had a really good Cab...
