for this region?

The climate of this appellation is unique, partly because its elevation frees it from the fog which blankets the valley below in the afternoon. Also, since it faces west, the region benefits from extended, direct afternoon sunlight. The soils are volcanic and porous, contributing greatly to radiant cooling. The temperature can drop as much as 30°F in the afternoon, allowing grapes to maintain good acidity. Zinfandel is emerging as the best varietal for the appellation’s growing conditions. However, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese are also planted here. Located on the western slope of the Vaca Mountains, northeast of the city of Napa, this AVA has over 1,500 acres of vines in a region of 11,000 acres. Grapes have been grown within the region for well over 100 years. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Atlas Peak 2007

The wine is a classic Napa Cabernet, with deep, inky black at the center and bright ruby along the edges. The nose a fantastic rush of leather, oak, vanilla and ripe dark fruit that practically begs you to take a sip. The taste is just amazing with a rush of ripe fruit, black cherry, blackberry and blueberry, that lingers a bit as the more com... Read More

Wow big hit of red fruit on entryplum, cherry, strawberry. Sadly, almost syrupy, though, not sweetish like many fruit forward wines can be. Very mellow on the tannin. Not a particularly big wine in spite of its 15% ABV. Its not an awful wine, but it lacks sophistication and I wont be seeking more. Read More

Dark plum, prune and rich chocolate with black currant and pleasant minerality on the nose. More rich chocolate mousse on the palate with loads of dark black fruit and refreshing acidity. • BTW, Antinori bought some property on Atlas Peak with the idea he could grow Sangio there.  Didn't work very well, so they grafted over to, what else, Cab.  Atlas Peak generally hasn't carried the same weight as Howell, Veeder, Spring, Diamond and the other "mountain" sub-AVAs. Next big AVA will be Coombsville, where Meteor hails from.  It regul... Read More
