Napa County Wine

There is some debate over how this famous wine region got its name. Spanish settlers named the Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area “Wappo,” and some say this is a derivation of “guapo” meaning “handsome,” while others say it means “brave,” with Napa being a further spin-off. Another legend is that Napa is a Wappo word for the land itself. Regardless, with its Mediterranean climate and diverse terroirs, this land eventually became one of the most important wine regions in the world.

The first vineyards in Napa were planted in 1836 by George Calvert Yount in what is now the town of Yountville. In the 1850s, Thomas Rutherford, who married Yount’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Yount, established the first vineyard in what would become Rutherford town. The first commercial winery was established by Charles Krug in the 1860s. Soon, the likes of Inglenook, Beringer and Schramsberg and many others set up their wineries and Read more »

  • Saddleback Cellars Merlot Oakville 2005

    Snoothrank:

The color in the glass is a nice garnet with very nice clarity despite its maturity. The nose is a lovely combination of ripe berries, red plum and macerated cherries, overlaid with a bit of leather and moss, reminiscent of some wonderful French Bordeaux. The taste is a rush of ripe fruit up front, raspberries, blackberries and plum that trans... Read More

  • Oakville East Exposure 2011

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely, dark, brooding indigo in the glass with bright ruby around the edges. The nose is classic Oakville Cabernet, with notes of oak, leather and violet over just a hint of blackberry. The taste is just awesome, with a blast of ripe fruit up front, blackberry, cherry and raspberry that wash over you. The ripe fruit transitions... Read More

  • Of course, Greg, Sonoma has some of the best New World PNs. Think I was sounding klaxons for The True here half a dozen years ago. Just proportionately so much dross, still, in that county and Napa, as well as further south. Oregon has its own issues, but also some good PN. I've lusted after the rare-perfected CA pinot for decades, and only had ... Read More

  • Aline.  Do not hesitate.  Send that PM to OT.  Mike Smith's wines are outstanding, and not ones that you are going to easily find at your local retail store.  Time spent with him will be a memorable highlight for you and your friends.Quite spendy, but Auberge du Soleil has a very panoramic view of Napa Valley.  It looks like they have a bar/bist...
