Napa County Wine

There is some debate over how this famous wine region got its name. Spanish settlers named the Native American tribe that originally inhabited the area “Wappo,” and some say this is a derivation of “guapo” meaning “handsome,” while others say it means “brave,” with Napa being a further spin-off. Another legend is that Napa is a Wappo word for the land itself. Regardless, with its Mediterranean climate and diverse terroirs, this land eventually became one of the most important wine regions in the world.

The first vineyards in Napa were planted in 1836 by George Calvert Yount in what is now the town of Yountville. In the 1850s, Thomas Rutherford, who married Yount’s granddaughter, Elizabeth Yount, established the first vineyard in what would become Rutherford town. The first commercial winery was established by Charles Krug in the 1860s. Soon, the likes of Inglenook, Beringer and Schramsberg and many others set up their wineries and Read more »

  • Lucha, I think we'll be making those big ones sooner than later.  It was 104 on the weekend in Osoyoos (the southern limit of the Okanagan Valley and our wine region).  It's definitely hotter than ever here too in Victoria, but the ocean cools things down nicely in the evening. I envy you getting a chance to ride in Napa, but I've decided it'll ... • Found Snooth by accident.  My wife and I are from Northern California, love wine, all kinds.  But that said, I am curious if anyone has found a Valpolicella "type" wine, Ripasso, or otherwise Italian style wine made here in Nor Cal.  I bumped into a winemaker in Auburn a couple of years ago who made a Ripasso wine (it was awesome); but he makes ... • Forlorn Hope Que Saudade Verdelho 2012

    Snoothrank:

From Vista Luna in Lodi and Dewitt in Amador All barrel fermented Waxy on the nose with big green tea aromas that are joined by faintly herbal, quince, and smoky almond tones. Overall this is a bit earthy and low but quite aromatic with hints of candied citrus peel. Light and then fruity on entry, this comes off as very clean, a bit pithy on th... Read More

  • Yes DVogler, I have visited some vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and I think even Lake County but it's been a few years and chapters in the past. I'm just recently acquiring an interest in wine and will be taking a wine tasting class at Chico State this Fall semester, so being a proactive student and getting a jump on it. I also live down the road fr... Read More
