Monterey Wine

Monterey is an AVA within the Monterey County region, in the Central Coast of California. It runs between Monterey Bay in the north and extends as far as San Luis Obispo AVA to the south. Most of the Salinas Valley lies within it, providing a natural channel for the Bay fog and winds which lengthen the growing season and control acid balance in the grapes.

The vastness of the region lends itself to somewhat diverse growing conditions. Coastal areas are suited to cool climate varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer while warmer sections tend toward Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel.

Monterey is further subdivided into the following regions:
Arroyo Seco
Carmel Valley
Hames Valley
San Antionio Valley - Monterey
San Bernabe
San Lucas
Santa Lucia Highlands

Monterey on Snooth

  • Talbott Kali Hart Pinot Noir Monterey 2015

    Snoothrank:

Light cherry, soft blossom and sticky tar notes on the nose. This has a sweet spice bloom on the palate that is explosive on entry with rich fruit flavors of red currant jam and Bing cherries, good acidity coming through towards a tart finish that's earthy and oaky with a resinous almost pine finish. • Matetic Corralillo Syrah 2006

    Snoothrank:

This wine was a ridiculous bargain. It was originally a $15-20 wine several years ago, and one of my local shops somehow got a case of it that they were selling for $5 a bottle. I might have been concerned that it was over the hill, but the color was great, and it had a fair degree of sediment indicating a wine made with minimal intervention. ... Read More

  • Belle Glos las Alturas Vineyard Pinot Noir 2015

    Snoothrank:

Another one from lunch at Marcello's Chophouse. Could not think of a better Pinot Noir. Just the style I prefer. Loads of Herbs, Spice, dried and stewed Fruit, and Chocolate, Bits of Vanilla, Cedar, Licorice, and Smoke. Very smooth, very interesting. , with hints of black licorice. Medium Tannins and long savory finish. Read More

  • Angeline Chardonnay Reserve Monterey County 2015

    Snoothrank:

Sweet spice and creamy caramel notes open on the nose for hints of lemon and green apple, peach and vanilla creamsicle. Tart and citrusy in the mouth, with lemon curd and fresh green apple notes, bright acidity and a creamy, oaky finish that carries a touch of melon and pineapple. Read More

A bit shy on the fruit. Bitter mid palate with a shortish finish. I'm not sure what the winemaker was trying to do with this wine. Read More

  • Chateau Julien Merlot 2002

    Snoothrank:

It's 15 years old now, the oldest wine I ever had till today... and I'm not impressed. The flavor is good, in general - it's round, ripe red fruits with prunes and leather. It has nice short aftertaste and significant amount of sediment, at least according to my experience... don't shake it=) but I could get all that with younger wines and I don... Read More
