Monterey Wine

Monterey is an AVA within the Monterey County region, in the Central Coast of California. It runs between Monterey Bay in the north and extends as far as San Luis Obispo AVA to the south. Most of the Salinas Valley lies within it, providing a natural channel for the Bay fog and winds which lengthen the growing season and control acid balance in the grapes.
The vastness of the region lends itself to somewhat diverse growing conditions. Coastal areas are suited to cool climate varietals such as Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling and Gewurtztraminer while warmer sections tend toward Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Zinfandel.
Monterey is further subdivided into the following regions:
Arroyo Seco
Carmel Valley
Hames Valley
San Antionio Valley - Monterey
San Bernabe
San Lucas
Santa Lucia Highlands

  • Wrath Chardonnay Monterey Ex Anima 2010

Label says little to no oak ageing, well there must have been some significant malo because this is a fairly big buttery oak bomb. Fairly one dimensional with little fruit and a touch of acidity and all that fat butter and oak. Read More

  • Belle Glos Pinot Noir las Alturas Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands 2012

This is a big and round pinot from Santa Lucia Highlands. This has chocolate covered cherries popping out along with vanilla on the back end. For a pinot, the acidity is a bit low and it seems like there may even be some syrah or merlot blended in. Read More

  • Bernardus Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Carmel Valley Marinus 1997

Enjoyed this last weekend with some friends. Bordeaux-style blend, I could definitly make out the Cab Franc marker in the wine. Smooth finish, medium acidity and just a great wine to really enjoy. Did not pair it with anything. Just enjoyed it. Highly reccomend if you can find it. Read More

  • Bernardus Winery Chardonnay 2011

Big and ripe on the nose with dripping pineapple fruit paired with toasty apricot tart and plenty of vanilla and ginger cream. Not as big as one might expect from the nose but certainly ripe with tropical fruit flavors redolent of mango and papaya along with over-ripe pineapple and creme brulee flavors. Theres plenty of acidity here so this is f... Read More

  • Muirwood Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Monterey 2010

Excellent value Cabernet from the Central coast. Prunes, pepper, and a few earth tones. Tannins are not as round as I like, but good nonetheless. At this price, this will become a regular drinker. Read More
