Santa Lucia Highlands Wine

The Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is a region within the Monterey district of California’s Central Coast. The vineyards are located within the hills of the Santa Lucia Mountains over the Salinas valley. The elevated locations of the vineyards, with well-drained granite soils ensure proper sun exposure but also cool evening breezes from Monterey Bay. This lengthens the growing season and provides excellent acid to alcohol balance and ripe fruit flavors for the wines.

Many of the wineries in the Santa Lucia Highlands are boutique operations who have a reputation for small production and high quality, graceful wines. The climate is suited to cool-climate Burgundian style wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as northern Rhone styles from Syrah and Viognier, as well as the Alsacian varietals Gewürtztraminer, Riesling and Pinot Gris. ~Amanda Schuster

  • Adelaida Pinot Noir Doctor's Vineyard 2011

This is a fairly big Adelaida pinot from Santa Lucia Highlands. The nose is fairly subdued but there are hints of dark berries, tar and a touch of smoke. On the palate is a burst of red and black cherry, ripe black plum, crisp acidity and mild, fine grained tannins. The finish has a touch of smoke on the back end and is medium long. Read More

  • Okay, getting back to the topic at hand, in effect the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA is the other side of those mountains.  Arroyo Seco is basically due east of Big Sur.  And there's San Antonio Valley a little further south.  (Pierce Family, whom I have touted on the "Completely Different" thread, are down there.)  Here's a nice map: http://wine.ap... • Pisoni is barely Pinot.  It's really ripe, but Bob Parker calls it ... ... are tired of the sweet Santa Lucia Highlands wines.  I know I am--I'm only drinking Rosella's Vineyard PNs from that area now.  Some of it is the winemaking style, some is the grapes themselves.  After years of being on Pisoni's waiting list, I was offered a pretty dec... • Muirwood Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve 2012

Pretty decent, middle of the road chardonnay, just right for a mid week drinker. This has some, but not a lot of oak, butter, creme brulee and soft lemon pith. Fair acidity and medium to short finish. Decent QPR. Read More
