Chalone Wine

enjoys one of the finest expressions of terroir anywhere. Distinctive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have earned the wines of Chalone cult status. High in the Gabilan Mountains, straddling the borders of Monterey and San Benito counties, this small appellation is characterized by distinctive limestone and decomposed granite soil. This unique soil combines with an arid climate to stress the vines, concentrating the flavor and mineral character of the legendary wines. Situated above the fog line, this AVA, with less than 300 acres under vine, enjoys high daytime summer temperatures, but low nighttime readings, preserving grape acidity and balance. This rugged terrain near Pinnacle National Monument is the setting for one of California’s viticultural splendors. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • As things go I didn't have time to pick up the 09 Matthew D. Taylor Michaud ... ... high up in the rocky Chalone mountains in Monterey County. Whatever he is doing, he should keep doing it.  The pinot is just fantastic, a real "holy-$*#$!-I've-never-had-a-pinot-quite-like-that" pinot. Dark, brooding, intense, muscular, but wonderfully balanced... Read More

  • Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Central Coast 1981

Opened on July 7, 2011, we were surprised by the vivacity of this old Pinot. A lovely bouquet of flowers and red fruits jumped from the glass at first pouring. On the palate, the wine was unusually profound at launch, and surprisingly tart, with sour cherry flavors and a nice complexity supported by a pleasant acidity. Warm, full and supple, w... Read More

  • Not by me, however, at least not yet.  Wine writer Laurie Daniels (doesn't ... Maybe he's getting it from Chalone?  But all those are pretty far north of his stated area of interest.)Kudos to Daniels, who tasted the Qupe blind, and to Lindquist if it really is back up to par.  For a long time, I thought it was a very good value and often availa...
