Chalone Wine

enjoys one of the finest expressions of terroir anywhere. Distinctive Chardonnay and Pinot Noir have earned the wines of Chalone cult status. High in the Gabilan Mountains, straddling the borders of Monterey and San Benito counties, this small appellation is characterized by distinctive limestone and decomposed granite soil. This unique soil combines with an arid climate to stress the vines, concentrating the flavor and mineral character of the legendary wines. Situated above the fog line, this AVA, with less than 300 acres under vine, enjoys high daytime summer temperatures, but low nighttime readings, preserving grape acidity and balance. This rugged terrain near Pinnacle National Monument is the setting for one of California’s viticultural splendors. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

Chalone on Snooth

  • Interesting about the vine age leading toward minerality/complexity. I guess in ... were planted in limestone (Chalone, Matthiasson). The problem with modern viticulture is that most vines are irrigated on drip systems which induces surface roots and does not lend to the roots searching deep for water. Sour aromas at first. Then, tart green apple, dusty, toasty oak. Hint of sulfur. Then notes of fresh green herbs, cream and some gravel. On the palate, it enters lush and creamy feeling. • Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Central Coast 2005

    Snoothrank:

At first opening, needs air as it's very tart and tight. Dark fruit on the nose. It's also very dark and heavy in the glass. A hulking pinot noir. Spice, fig and blackberry juice with aromas of cedar and some light cola notes with some earth. Juicy black and red berries framed by a nice acid profile and hints of zesty spice and earth. Blac... • Chalone Vineyard Pinot Noir Central Coast 2007

    Snoothrank:

Deep red plum color. Yeasty, earthy aroma. Very pleasant on the palate. Somewhat medium weight with a only bit of fruit flavor. Light-to-mediaum all through the palate and through the finish. This is a very good red sipping wine. You can drink it, be refreshed and not be reminded of it 10 minutes later. $14.99 at a Ralph's grocery store (... Read More
