Nice carmelized and mineral nose, a little like Trimbach Cuvee Emile. Unfortunately, the flavors are totally dried out and sour. I plead ignortance to West Coast Rieslings, but I suspect they do not have sufficient acidity for long keeping (unlike the French). Better for drinking under five years of age. By comparison, the 97 Trimbach Cuvee Emile was a lovely wine, drinking nicely this spring    (hide)

The nose is pretty good (hints of floral and carmel smells) but kind of salty on the front end and leaves something to be desired on the somewhat acidic finish. Okay, but not great for the money ... Wyndham's Bin 555 is a better and more reasonably priced Shiraz in my opinion.    (hide)

  Galante Vineyards Blackjack Pasture Cabernet Sauvignon 2004

  Very nice wine. Rich and fruity with chocolate and spice flavors. Its a really fruity wine and that dominates the profile, hiding the tannins and structure. There are some more noticeable tannins on the finish, but the sweet fruit dominates.

Read moreA nice blend of assertive ripe herbs, black olive, ripe black fruits and measured oak presents a promising set of aromatics. In the mouth this seems too be too big and rich as the first wave of fruit washes over the palate but the excellent acids and polished tannins quickly take control of the palate, marshaling the earthy black currant fruit with it’s savory hints of cigar box, tomato paste and spiced cocoa in to line. A gutsy wine that is already delicious yet promise to develop in the bottle for several years. 91pts    (hide)

  Heller Estate Cab Sauv 2004

  Solid wine - tasted amongst much more expensive wines, but held its own and stood out - definite earthiness on the initial taste that smooths out for a great finish.

I grew up on Long Island and used to make trips out to the wineries on the east end. It wasn’t until 2000, when I moved out to the SF Bay area, where I really developed an appreciation. I visited dozens of wineries in Napa, Sonoma, Monterey, Carmel, Livermore, etc. and joined many wine clubs of some of my favorites. Also attended many wine tasting events. I was on the board of the Diablo Valley Women’s League which held an annual fundraising event. One of the major events, was boutique wineries (or some call them cult wineries) offered wine tasting and wine for auction. Personally, I think I taste between 25-40 wines a year - to be honest, it was probably a lot more when I was in CA. I just recently (in the last few weeks) became an Independent Wine Consultant. I moved back to NY in 2004 and one of the things I miss most about CA, is the availability of a great variety of wines. The company I signed on with was just approved to conduct their business in NY State and when I saw the opportunity, I knew I had to jump on board! My favorite varietal is Cabernet Sauvignon. Of all the wines I’ve tasted, Rombauer ($40 Cab) is by far my favorite, especially for value. On the higher end, I don’t think you can beat the Beringer Reserves (anything Howell Mountain). Lately, I’ve been drinking a little red blend, Menage A Trois (had to try it for the name alone), which I get for under $10 bottle at my local ‘Bottles and Cases’ - a great store out here in Huntington, they buy volume on distributor specials and offer great prices. Problem is their inventory changes and not all wines are available all the time. Been diving into some Italians, a little lighter and better drinking in the warmer weather and also some Pinot Noir, had a great one from Williamette Valley the other night. I could go on and on, have a lot of wines I love, but I hope I answered most of your questions. Thanks!    (hide)
