The Carmel Valley appellation shares few of the gentle charms of the nearby seaside town of Carmel. This rugged AVA begins at Carmel Valley village, five miles inland, and is marked by high elevations and steep slopes with well-drained granite terraces. The valley, with less than 300... Read more

Owen Roe Riesling Yakima Valley Dubrul Vineyard 2002
Snoothrank:
This is the second bottle I've had that has been over the hill. Nice carmelized and mineral nose, a little like Trimbach Cuvee Emile. Unfortunately, the flavors are totally dried out and sour. I plead ignortance to West Coast Rieslings, but I suspect they do not have sufficient... Read more

Nine Stones Shiraz Barossa Valley 2007
Snoothrank:
Not that impressive right from the bottle, and after a few hours decanting not a whole lot better. The nose is pretty good (hints of floral and carmel smells) but kind of salty on the front end and leaves something to be desired on the somewhat acidic finish. Okay, but not great for... Read more

Galante Vineyards Blackjack Pasture Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Snoothrank:
Very nice wine. Rich and fruity with chocolate and spice flavors. Its a really fruity wine and that dominates the profile, hiding the tannins and structure. There are some more noticeable tannins on the finish, but the sweet fruit dominates.

Galante Vineyards Blackjack Pasture Cabernet Sauvignon 2004
Snoothrank:
A nice blend of assertive ripe herbs, black olive, ripe black fruits and measured oak presents a promising set of aromatics. In the mouth this seems too be too big and rich as the first wave of fruit washes over the palate but the excellent acids and polished tannins quickly take... Read more

Heller Estate Cab Sauv 2004
Snoothrank:
Solid wine - tasted amongst much more expensive wines, but held its own and stood out - definite earthiness on the initial taste that smooths out for a great finish.

Hey Greg! Thanks for your curiosity! I am in my mid 40’s and have been drinking wine for 27 years. I grew up on Long Island and used to make trips out to the wineries on the east end. It wasn’t until 2000, when I moved out to the SF Bay area, where I really developed an... Read more

Bernardus Vineyards and Winery Sauvignon Blanc Griva Vineyard 2007
Snoothrank:
Crisp and quite acidic with a distinct grapefruit tone as well as herb characteristics. This is full of character and not for the faint of palate. Perfect for an upscale fish dinner. I did enjoy the bottle for its uniqueness but would not buy again, it's just a little too acidic... Read more
