Carmel Valley Wine

The Carmel Valley appellation shares few of the gentle charms of the nearby seaside town of Carmel. This rugged AVA begins at Carmel Valley village, five miles inland, and is marked by high elevations and steep slopes with well-drained granite terraces. The valley, with less than 300 acres under vine, runs in a southeastern direction along the Carmel River and the Cachagua Creek. Dominated by red Bordeaux varietals -- such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot -- the appellation is distinctly warmer than the northern end of the Salinas Valley. Although it is classified as a cool region, its vineyards are generally situated at elevations above 1,000 feet, and are less influenced by the coastal fog and wind which affects the northern end of the Salinas Valley. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Bernardus Winery Red Bordeaux Blend Carmel Valley Marinus 1997

Enjoyed this last weekend with some friends. Bordeaux-style blend, I could definitly make out the Cab Franc marker in the wine. Smooth finish, medium acidity and just a great wine to really enjoy. Did not pair it with anything. Just enjoyed it. Highly reccomend if you can find it. Read More

  • My father had an expression:  Centrally located and convenient to nothing.  Referred to working in Wichita, KS, but was used at other times.  That was, I think, the point that JD made earlier.  Carmel was on the table at one point, but there's some sense in doing it closer to an airport if folks like to travel that way.  That said, anyone who wa... • So we have some interest in having a West Coast meet-up (or you can call it a throw-down) for Pinot.  Here's my opening proposal:  We'll do it very close to the Oakland Airport, to save those who are traveling in from out of town (like Emark and JonDerry) from having extra travel if they want to fly.  This would give LuchaVino a chance to attend...
