The Redwood Valley AVA is a subregion of Mendocino in California’s North Coast. The region benefits from higher ridges and cooler temperatures than other parts of Mendocino, with the picturesque Russian River running through it. It also has its own distinct soil types, characterized by intense red color, alluvial clay and loam. All of these features make it an ideal location for grape-growing, allowing for a long growing season and desirable balance in the wines.

Early settlers first began to plant vineyards in the 1870s. By the end of the century, the wines had garnered a significant reputation and had attracted many wine-makers. Unfortunately, as with most nearby regions, Phylloxera and the Prohibition presented a double-whammy effect that forced many wineries to shut down and pursue other crops.

The Lolonis family was one of the first to emerge from this period to replant and redirect wine production, and by the 1950s, more than 4000 acres of land were devoted to vineyards Read more »

  • Edmeades Winery Zinfandel Mendocino County Piffero 2009

    Snoothrank:

Matte on the nose with hints of oily seed over spiced plum fruit. Plump in the mouth, with lovely, fresh if abundant tannins that lend this a firmness in the mouth. The macerated black cherry fruit is framed with hints of earth and just a faint edge of herbs. Theres plenty of juicy black fruit on the moderately long finish. Nicely done, if a to... Read More

  • Graziano Zinfandel Kazmet Vineyards 2010

    Snoothrank:

A little tarry on the nose, with hickory smoke and some mid level sandalwood spice adding complexity to the blue-tinged subtle blackberry fruit. This is fresh and juicy in the mouth with bright fruit that shows a sweet edge to the very red, tart fruit. While a fairly big wine, this is not terribly dense, with a lovely finish that shows a hint of... Read More

  • Claudia Springs Zinfandel Redwood Valley Rhodes Vineyard 2010

    Snoothrank:

Jammy, blackberry fruit smells a bit wild and sharp on the nose, with obvious wood toast and vanilla accents. This is surprisingly bright in the mouth with an early rush of lovely briary, brambly, classic Zin berry fruit. The oak is obvious but well judged, a little simple but showing lovely purity; the finish shows a little spice and lovely bri... Read More

  • Redwood Creek Pinot Noir United States California Red 2009

    Snoothrank:

Jammy and stewy on the nose with heavy vanilla and dried fruit aromas topped with cedar chips. Bright if fairly innocuous on entry, this shows good acidity and noticeable dry wood tannins on the palate along with some dried red fruit and leathery, savory notes that lead to blueberry, raspberry jam and sandalwood on the back end. The finish is sh... Read More
