Located east of Mendocino's Redwood Valley, the upland Potter Valley AVA sits more than 200 feet higher than surrounding areas. The lack of population in this remote valley is only exceeded by its lack of resident wineries. The 1,000+ acres of vineyards here are utilized by producers in other, less isolated areas of the county. Great day-night temperature variations separate Potter Valley from other growing areas in Mendocino. Mid-day in this inland valley can be truly hot, but nighttime temperatures plummet. Under such conditions, varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and, increasingly, Pinot Noir flourish, developing strong but refined character. An added bonus of the Potter Valley - resulting from the very high water table of the Eel River watershed - is a desirable proneness to botrytis in certain vintages. This has drawn international attention to this appellation for its outstanding, albeit intermittent, botrytis Semillon and Riesling production. – Description Read more »

Potter Valley on Snooth

  • Dashe Dry Riesling Mcfadden Farm Potter Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Fruity on the nose with lemon, grapefruit and green apple notes plush and fresh and a touch of oak. Perky acidity and a bit spicy on the palate, the citrus and stone fruit character continues with white peach, pink grapefruit and lemon pith, finishing with more oak notes that are more on the herbal side than the creamy side. • Paul Dolan Vineyards Pinot Noir Potter Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Dusty cherry and sweet baking spice aromas with a fair bit of ripe red fruit, mostly raspberry and strawberry. Expressive and generous palate of ripe cherry bunches, juicy strawberry and cranberry, chunky tannins supporting the palate and an herbal note towards the finish that ties the palate together, ending on a cool note of licorice and allsp... • Paul Dolan Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc Potter Valley 2015

    Snoothrank:

Grassy white peach, lemon and clean floral notes on the nose. Juicy peach, melon and pink grapefruit notes present here with a warmth to the mid palate that highlights the acidity, herbal grassiness and cantaloupe on the finish. Clean, light and fruity. Read More

  • Paul Dolan Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Reticent on the nose with faint lemon oil and crab apple aromas. Broad and transparent in the mouth, this shows some lovely tart peach flavors framed with creamy key lime notes. A bit short though with a nice cleansing mineral note on the finish, this is easy to drink and well made though it does lack some intensity. In truth a bit of time in th... Read More

  • Mcfadden Potter Valley Brut NV

    Snoothrank:

The 2012 Mendocino County Wine Competition gave this a Double Gold Medal and Virginie Boone of Wine Enthusiast Magazine made it an Editor's Pick for Best Year End Bubblies. I just put as much in my wine racks as I could get my hands on. Green apple and grapefruit, bright, lean, crisp, unapologetically French in style. Read More

  • Dashe Potter Valley Mcfadden Farms l'Enfant Terrible Zinfandel 2009

    Snoothrank:

Lush, fruit driven Sauvignon Blanc. Honeydew melon, pear, mango, and grapefruit flavors make this 2009 McFadden Farm Sauvignon Blanc so much easier to pair with food than the plethora of cat pee aroma and grass flavored SBs that litter the store shelves. Read More

  • Dashe Potter Valley Mcfadden Farms l'Enfant Terrible Zinfandel 2009

    Snoothrank:

Perfect Zinfandel flavors of brambly raspberry, herb, and black pepper but lighter in body. Not a giant jammy and oak monster, but a wonderful food friendly, very enjoyably drinkable cool climate grown Zinfandel. Read More
