Located east of Mendocino's Redwood Valley, the upland Potter Valley AVA sits more than 200 feet higher than surrounding areas. The lack of population in this remote valley is only exceeded by its lack of resident wineries. The 1,000+ acres of vineyards here are utilized by producers in other, less isolated areas of the county. Great day-night temperature variations separate Potter Valley from other growing areas in Mendocino. Mid-day in this inland valley can be truly hot, but nighttime temperatures plummet. Under such conditions, varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling and, increasingly, Pinot Noir flourish, developing strong but refined character. An added bonus of the Potter Valley - resulting from the very high water table of the Eel River watershed - is a desirable proneness to botrytis in certain vintages. This has drawn international attention to this appellation for its outstanding, albeit intermittent, botrytis Semillon and Riesling production. – Description Read more »

Potter Valley on Snooth

  • Chateau Montelena Riesling 2011

    Snoothrank:

Absolutely fantastic California riesling. Fresh tropical fruit, slight petrol, great balance, only slightly sweet but very delicious. This went great with our spicy asian meal. Great QPR! Read More

  • Mcfadden Potter Valley Brut NV

    Snoothrank:

The 2012 Mendocino County Wine Competition gave this a Double Gold Medal and Virginie Boone of Wine Enthusiast Magazine made it an Editor's Pick for Best Year End Bubblies. I just put as much in my wine racks as I could get my hands on. Green apple and grapefruit, bright, lean, crisp, unapologetically French in style. Read More

  • Mcfadden Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2009

    Snoothrank:

Lush, fruit driven Sauvignon Blanc. Honeydew melon, pear, mango, and grapefruit flavors make this 2009 McFadden Farm Sauvignon Blanc so much easier to pair with food than the plethora of cat pee aroma and grass flavored SBs that litter the store shelves. Read More

  • Tahto Sauvignon Blanc Mendocino County 2010

    Snoothrank:

This wine is dilute tasting with very little varietal character. The nose is very subdued and does not come out with air. This is one to avoid. This wine should not have been released for sale. My rating --- 75 Read More

  • Dashe Cellars Riesling Potter Valley Mcfadden Farms 2010

    Snoothrank:

This smells a bit funky, though air brings out a lovely honeyed top note over lightly spicy muskmelon, apricot and raw cashew fruit. Rather low on entry, this tenses up a bit on the mid-palate revealing rather ephemeral layers of fruit pitched against a taut spine of acidity. Theres a nice underlying river stone minerality in the mouth accenting... Read More

  • Potter's Triple Distilled Vodka Premier

    Snoothrank:

Most vodka's are overpriced because you the consumer must pay for the advertising. Potter's has produced a clean and unobtrusive vodka that makes a smooth and clean tasting dry martini. If you like Smirnoff you will enjoy Potter's Premium Vodka. I have mixed martini's for the fussiest of vodka drinkers and every single person has enjoyed the... Read More
