Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

  • Parducci Pinot Gris Small Lot Blend 2012

    Snoothrank:

Aromas of lemon hard candy greet the nose along with a suggestion of spearmint and green pear skins. A bit soft in the mouth, though very broad, this is rather mouth filling with subtle flavors of raw nut meats, green apples and citrus pith along with a little cooked fruit character. Easy drinking with a very modest finish, this smells better t... Read More

  • Copain Pinot Noir Tous Ensemble 2011

    Snoothrank:

Not a particularly well-balanced wine but very interesting and positive for the price. Delicate but assertive, the nose has some funk and leathery aspects that contrast with the juicy mouth feel. Not overly-fruity but juicy with some tart notes. Finishes where it started with oak and vanilla. Quite a ride! Read More

  • Roederer Estate Brut l'Ermitage Vintage 2005

Very nice bubbles from Mendocino - Roederer Estate. Nice yeasty, biscuit with a touch of dried apricot. Tight bubbles, nice acidity and a medium finish, there's a lot to like here. Read More

  • Rhys Alesia Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Lovely, clear straw color. Very pleasant nosepeaches, green apples. Delightfully delicate on the palate. Not your mothers oaky/buttery Chardonnay. More in the style of a white Burgundy than a trendy California Chardonnay. Flavors are delicate hints of green apple or peach. Excellent tartness makes this a very refreshing wine. Read More

  • Goldeneye Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2007

    Snoothrank:

Pretty, red translucence in the glass. Very gentle, close to earthy, maybe, mushroomy nose. Very light on the tongue. Thankfully, does not blast me with cherry flavor at the tip of the tongue. It definitely firms up as it moves past the tongue and palate. The initial lightness frightened me, at first, but in the back of the mouth firm tann... Read More
