Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

  • Goldeneye Anderson Valley Vin Gris of Pinot Noir 2012

    Snoothrank:

Really enjoyed this Rose of Pinot from (Duckhorn) Goldeneye in Mendocino. Loads of bright red and bing cherry, a bit of strawberry/rhubarb, nice acidity and a decent finish. Read More

  • Rhys Alesia Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Lovely, clear straw color. Very pleasant nosepeaches, green apples. Delightfully delicate on the palate. Not your mothers oaky/buttery Chardonnay. More in the style of a white Burgundy than a trendy California Chardonnay. Flavors are delicate hints of green apple or peach. Excellent tartness makes this a very refreshing wine. Read More

  • Goldeneye Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2007

    Snoothrank:

Pretty, red translucence in the glass. Very gentle, close to earthy, maybe, mushroomy nose. Very light on the tongue. Thankfully, does not blast me with cherry flavor at the tip of the tongue. It definitely firms up as it moves past the tongue and palate. The initial lightness frightened me, at first, but in the back of the mouth firm tann... Read More

  • Bedrock Grenache Gibson Ranch Mendocino 2013

    Snoothrank:

Not the clearest color I've ever seen in a wine. It's just a tad murky with a tinge of yellow. Very "fresh" noseslight berry and slight citrus hints. Delightful on entry to the mouthquite light, some berry/cherry flavors. A somewhat unusual mouth-feel that I think might be from a lack of acid. There is little or no tartness in this one. Aft... • Steele Zinfandel Catfish Vineyard Century Vines Lake County 2010

    Snoothrank:

Oak, lavender, wild cherry and clay soil tones come together on the gentle nose. Rough and plump in the mouth but not that large scaled with creamy milk chocolate and subtle cigar box accents adding complexity on the midpalate. Very easy to drink with mostly sweet wood spice on the modest finish. 87pts Read More

  • Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel 2011

    Snoothrank:

A little tight on the nose and only gently fruity with mineral and oak base notes under subtle herb and blackcurrant aromas. Tense and a little spicy up front with fine clarity on the palate. This exhibits good transparency and clarity in the mouth with slightly jammy by not terribly intense fruit. Nice length and focus on the finish which shows... Read More

  • Edmeades Zinfandel Shamrock Vineyard Mendocino 2011

    Snoothrank:

A little oaky and herbal one the nose with a black cherry blackberry profile that is pure and intense. Rich, chewy and fairly powerful in the mouth with lovely fruit that shows a gentle sweetness and a streak of vanilla that drives through the lively and long finish. This is perhaps a bit simple but very attractive in a lush way. 91pts Read More
