Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

Mendocino County on Snooth

  • Moniker Cabernet Sauvignon Mendocino County 2014

    Snoothrank:

Chocolate, blackberries and black currant on the nose with a dusty moist earth and even a bit of red fruit. Bright and cheerful palate of fresh spice, zesty acidity, cherry, cranberry and strawberry fruit and a pleasantly long mixed berry and cocoa powder finish that's glazed with a bit of medicine Read More

  • Halcon Esquisto Yorkville Highlands 2016

    Snoothrank:

Something of a volatile nose. Lots of red fruit on the tip of the tongue. Sadly, sweeter than I normally enjoy. When I hold the wine in my mouth for a few seconds, I get a stony flavor or sensation. This wine seems a little bit hot to me--not enough to really bother me, though. Read More

  • Theopolis Vineyards Petite Sirah Yorkville Highlands Mendocino County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Dark rich and savory aromas of minerality, blackberry and black currant fruit. Full bodied and bold on the palate, presenting mostly black fruit flavors of blackberry and black currant, a core of spice and leather running through this with a finish that's austere yet still juicy. Finishes with great length of fruit and a bit of earth. Read More

  • Zig Zag Zin 2013

    Snoothrank:

Had this with lunch the other day. Nice darkness in the glass but other than the opaque color, not much to recommend this one. Surprisingly light, tart, acidic, and dry. Very little fruit. My experience was far from the tasting notes on the winery page - Zinfandel is our first love, and Zig Zag Zin is noexception. This is a HEADY multifaceted wi... Read More

  • Halcon Alturas Yorkville Highlands 2012

    Snoothrank:

This wine may define savoriness in a Syrah. Nothing like my experience with the same wine two years ago. Very gentle red fruit on entry and, then, an almost saltiness. I still have yet to taste bacon in a Syrah, but I suspect that is the direction this one is going. Sedate tanninconsistent with two years of aging since my last report. Read More
