Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

  • Halcon Esquisto Yorkville Highlands 2013

    Snoothrank:

PnPed. Fairly dark red color. Subdued nosemay open up with more airbut there is noticeable dried fruit hits. On the tongue and under the palate, there is a delightful but light initial hit of dark fruitIm sticking with the dried fruit idea and saying prunewithout a lot of fruity sweetness. Not unexpectantly, this isn't the biggest red wine i... Read More

  • Parducci Petite Sirah Reserve True Grit 2012

This is definitely a food wine due to the extreme dryness. Well balanced, full bodied, nice strong finish. I liked it with steak. It was overly dry solo. Read More

  • Consilience Zinfandel Rhode's Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is a big, bold, jammy, chocolatey wine that shows you it's flavors in layers. I've never had anything like it before or since. I am brokenhearted that the Rhodes Vineyard will no longer be a source for these grapes. No more layered divine deliciousness. Read More

  • Bedrock Alder Springs Syrah 2012

    Snoothrank:

Subdued black fruit aromas, with something of a fungal/mushroomy suggestion. Subtle hit of blackberry on the tip of the tongue. Initial fruit sensation evolves to an earthiness, and, then a steely flavor. Pretty serious tannin and acid suggest that I not open up future bottles for some time. Read More

  • Sandlands Carignane Mendocino County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Pretty red color. Muted, dusty nose. Hit of raspberry or cherry on the tip of the tongue. Then some earthinessnot as much as Im used to seeing in Carignanes. This is followed by serious acid tartness. Drying tannins are apparent, but they are different from tannins that I get from Cabernet Sauvignon or Zinfandel. Not terribly heavy. This ... Read More

  • Redwood Creek Mendoza Malbec 2011

    Snoothrank:

Elegantly spiced fruits on the palate, inky purplish tones for color and satiny soft mouthfeel. The aromas are still fresh and slightly alcoholic, but there are hints of cherry and blackberry. Flavors may include watermelon sweetness right at first, with emerging spice and earthy tones. Great bang for the buck!! Read More
