Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

Mendocino County on Snooth

  • Cabot Pinot Noir Nash Mill Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

Red plum colorslightly darker than most trendy California PNs you see these days. Interesting fruit flavors on entrysome black cherry but more stone fruit, plum, I guess. Medium-bodied. Fruit is neutralized mid-palate with earthiness and acid. Acid is what really makes this an enjoyable wine. Read More

  • Alesia Alder Springs Syrah 2011

    Snoothrank:

Woody briary nose. Medium-bodied wine. Variety of flavors on the tip of the tonguesome red berry. Some wood or briary thing, some mineral. Not particularly tannic and not overly acidic. Some fugal or mushroomy thing on the back of the palate and the aftertaste. Very enjoyable wine. Read More

  • Black Kite Angel Hawk Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Bright cherry blossom and raspberry aromas on the nose. Cool and fresh in the mouth, this has great lift and acidity through the mid palate with notes of raspberry, ripe cherry and mixed berry, a fair bit of spice showing as well towards the finish and a bit of herb overlaying perceptible tannic structure and a tart earthy note to top it off. The aromas are clean, crisp and slightly acidic, with dominant pear, apple and apricot pits. The flavors follow suit, with well rounded acidity on the palate, and robust pear and apple making up the flavor profile. Just s... Read More

  • Lazy Creek Vineyards Gewürztraminer Anderson Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Lightly floral honeysuckle and thistle flower aromas with baked apple notes and hints of tea leaf on the nose. More tea leaf on the palate with good ripe acidity, this turns quite ripe and freshly fruity in the mouth with white peach and melon flavors and a hint of lemon zest and oak on the finish. Read More

  • Ferrari Carano Sky High Ranch Pinot Noir Mendocino Ridge 2014

    Snoothrank:

Nicely floral notes of violets and ripe cherry with notes of sweet spice on the nose. This has some good acidity coming through and is a touch medicinal with notes of licorice, ripe cherry, blueberry and a creamy finish. Herbal and oaky with soft through through the mid palate. Read More

  • Rhys Alesia Chardonnay Alder Springs Vineyard 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very much an oaky, buttery nose. Yup. Serious butter or, maybe even, butterscotch (without the sweetness) on the tongue. A touch of tropical fruit flavor towards the back of the palate. Some tartness at the back of the palate, but, generally, fairly light on acid. Suggestion of mint and cinnamon (?) on the aftertaste. Read More
