Mendocino County Wine

Mendocino County AVA is a large and climatically diverse region within the North Coast region of California. Wine-making began here in the 1850s when failed gold prospectors planted vineyards. Italian immigrants arrived soon after and expanded plantings into the hillsides. Despite the expansion of the wine industry at this time, Mendocino County wines remained fairly obscure and isolated, though more and more vineyards were being planted for local consumption. But this isolation worked in the region’s favor, as many of the vines were spared from the Phylloxera epidemic and the rest could be salvaged by regrafting as hybrid European-American rootstock, which was immune to the dreaded louse.

However, like most of the California wine industry, Mendocino County suffered near collapse during the Prohibition from 1921 - 1933. The region did not recover until the 1960s when the Parducci and Fetzer family estates rose to prominence. Other wineries followed their example. Today Read more »

  • Philo Ridge Vineyards Viognier Nelson Ranch

    Snoothrank:

After visiting the charming (but expensive) rusticity of Boonville CA, one cannot resist tasting the wares of the fine burgers of the township... beginning with Philo Ridge. This Viognier is nearly 4 years old, but doing well in the bottle with wonderful ginger, lychee, and stewed peach on the nose. If you like a ramped up Condrieu, this is yo... Read More

  • Edmeades' Folly Red Wine Blend 2012

    Snoothrank:

Juicy and full of blackberry, black cherry and baking spices on the nose with more red fruits like red currant and cherries poking through as the wine opens. Full and rich in the mouth, with dark black cherry flavors, hints of cocoa, well integrated oak and vanilla, and black cherry throughout. Acidity is good and supports the wine well but ther... • Valdez Family Winery Zinfandel St. Peter's Church Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

This is a big, dark Anderson Valley zin from Valdez, probably the least restrained they make. Loads of ripe black cherries, blackberries, fig, dried plum along with a touch of smoke and spice. This wine carries its not shy alcohol of 15.2% very well. The tannins are smooth and well integrated along with a fairly long finish. Read More

  • Wilde Farm Donnelly Creek Pinot Noir Anderson Valley 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fairly dark color in the glass blocking much light. Quite pleasant nosecherry or strawberry, some vanilla, some light mint. Nicely attractive on the tongue. I get that fruitiness that was detected on the nose, and Im having a tough time deciding if it is cherry or more strawberry. Some stoniness. Very light on the tannin and very pleasant a... Read More

  • Halcon Prado Mendocino County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Light nose--something of tropical fruitwith, maybe, with the slightest hint of pungency. On the tongue, tropical fruit is immediately apparentpineapple, banana. Then I get acidmore lemony than pineapple. The final flavor sensation is caramel. When I detect the caramel it also becomes apparent that this wine has a somewhat viscous mouth feel... Read More

  • Ceritas Pinot Noir Hacienda Secoya Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Lots of light comes through the garnet color. Fairly perfumey nosecherry blossoms, violets. Quite light-bodiedI guess this was forecasted by the light coming through in the glass. Abrupt hit of cherry flavor on introduction, but the lightness of the wine keeps it away from the cough syrup taste that I get in a lot of PNs. No tannin at all. ... Read More

  • Bedrock Alder Springs Syrah 2012

    Snoothrank:

Fantastic Mendocino syrah from Bedrock. Still very young. There's dark berries on the nose and ripe blackberry, a bit of spice and pepper, nice acidity and a fairly long finish. The tannins are just a bit rustic and grippy but should mellow nicely with some age. Read More

  • Philo Ridge Vineyards Zinfandel 2009

    Snoothrank:

Tasted twice... once in Boonville and then at home back in the Great White North (actually, rainy north); both tastings similar; there is that cloying of fermenting Maraschino Cherry familiar to lovers of this grape, but there is more of Apulia than California here with a smooth, light texture on entry... with the sweet cherry confection. Smoot... Read More
