Lake County is an emerging wine region within California’s North Coast, north of Napa. Clear Lake, the state’s largest inland body of water, surrounds the county and regulates the local climate. Most of the vineyards are located to the cooler south of the region.

Like most of this part of California, wine-making began in the 1800s, beginning with missionaries who made ceremonial wines, continuing its progress as California was liberated from Mexico and the settlers and entrepreneurs arrived. Wines of high repute were being produced here. But also as with most nearby regions, many of the vineyards were abandoned for other agriculture due to the Phylloxera and Prohibition double-whammy between the turn of the 20th century and the 1930s.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that a few perceptive vintners saw the area’s potential and began replanting vineyards. From there, the industry has expanded significantly, with an excellent reputation for quality wine Read more »

  • Six Sigma Ranch Tempranillo Lake County 2008

    Snoothrank:

Forgot what full bodied wine was really like. Heavy oak finish...would have preferred this with a steak. Dark fruit personality and serious heft. Not my usual style, but I appreciated the personality on it. Read More

  • Line 39 Sauvignon Blanc 2012

    Snoothrank:

Quite ripe on the nose with peachy aromas topped with hints of flowers and orange gel candies and maybe even a hint of blackcurrant. This is smooth and polished in the mouth, with a nice base of fruit flavors built on the peach and candied citrus notes also found on the nose. In spite of sufficient acidity to keep this lively the finish gets a ... Read More

Dilute tasting, little fruit, slightly light in color; this is cabernet Lite. Somewhat disagreeable but improves a bit with air to become almost drinkable. Used most of mine for cooking. My rating-- 70. Read More

  • Cougar's Leap Black Rock Zinfandel Red Hills Lake County 2009

    Snoothrank:

Fresh oak greets the nose along with sour blue and black fruits that have a meaty edge to them. This is cool and firm on the palate with flavors of thoroughly ripe dark berryalmost curranty fruitwith blueberry accents and a nutty top note. The oak turns a touch smoky on the moderately long finish, which has blueberry and tart cranberry notes. 90... Read More
