Lake County is an emerging wine region within California’s North Coast, north of Napa. Clear Lake, the state’s largest inland body of water, surrounds the county and regulates the local climate. Most of the vineyards are located to the cooler south of the region.

Like most of this part of California, wine-making began in the 1800s, beginning with missionaries who made ceremonial wines, continuing its progress as California was liberated from Mexico and the settlers and entrepreneurs arrived. Wines of high repute were being produced here. But also as with most nearby regions, many of the vineyards were abandoned for other agriculture due to the Phylloxera and Prohibition double-whammy between the turn of the 20th century and the 1930s.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that a few perceptive vintners saw the area’s potential and began replanting vineyards. From there, the industry has expanded significantly, with an excellent reputation for quality wine Read more »

  • Yes DVogler, I have visited some vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, and I think even Lake County but it's been a few years and chapters in the past. I'm just recently acquiring an interest in wine and will be taking a wine tasting class at Chico State this Fall semester, so being a proactive student and getting a jump on it. I also live down the road fr... Read More

  • Vigilance Cimarron Vineyard Lake County 2011

    Snoothrank:

Blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon with an 14.2% abv. Dark purple in the glass and nicely fruity on the nose. Tasting provides lots of dark fruits, mild acidity and finishes with a nice bit of tannins ala the Cab. 88pts. Read More

  • I think Dunn's son is more involved in the eponymous winery, as well as ... has winemaking going on in Lake County and France, so it's just a question of how hands-on you have to be to be called the "wine maker." I think the whole LS idea is pretty radical.  I'd be interested to know what their criteria for bringing on these winemakers is, and... • Well we are back from the Glen Ellen/Kenwood trip. We found a few wines we liked, and enjoyed exploring the area. Since I am a big pinot person, especially RRV or sonoma coast, I knew I wasn't necessarily in the heart of that area of Sonoma,  But since it had been so long since I visited this area, we decided to give it a go.We stopped first in ...
