Humboldt Wine

About half of the nearly 30 wineries in Humboldt County source the majority of their grapes from within the county. Most of the vineyards are small plots that are scattered on South facing hillsides. The main varietals grown in the county include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and others. The climate in the county varies with distance from the coast, elevation and other factors. Because of the rugged terrain, there are many distinct micro-climates. Each location can produce distinct traits, even in the same varietal. – Description from Andrew46

Something of a phenolic nose. Lots of red fruit on entrystrawberry, plumand I should add tart fruit. Some tingling around the edges of the tongueanother indication of acid. An unfortunate harshness at the back of the palate. Its not clear to me whether this is from acid or alcohol. Noticeable, but not abusive tannin. For some reason or oth... Read More

  • Cabot Zinfandel Humboldt County 2013

Lots of bright red fruit on entrycherry, raspberry. After passing the tip of the tongue I get the soil. Thats good because it tamps down the slightly excessive red fruit. Then acid and tannin kick in. Both are prominent and both are welcome. This is a darned good Zinfandel. Zins like this may tempt me away from Dry Creek Valley as Ground ... Read More

  • Cabot Klamath Cuvee Red Table Wine 2009

Nose of red fruit. On the tongue Im getting a little bit of cherry, but more earthiness. Not as big or robust as I might have expected for a Zin/Syrah blend. Great tannin. Its funny, Ive never described tannin as great, before, but in this wine the tannin provides substance. So, at the rear of the palate, I am getting the robustness that I ... Read More

Cabot Zinfandel 6-pack from Humboldt County.OK, this one is not a Zinfandel varietal bottling.  It is, obviously, a red blend.
