This is Gold Rush country...home of the Mother Lode! But these days, this storied region is cashing in on a new crop. This appellation seems to be the new promised land for aspiring California wine makers. The fortunes of this unique AVA are dictated by its elevation, with allowable vineyard land situated between 1,200-3,500 feet. Vineyards above 2,000-feet, resting on high-acid, magma-based soils, enjoy four distinct seasons. Rising above the fog line, El Dorado experiences eastern breezes from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, which force hot daytime air into the valley below. Land remains affordable and provides all of the attributes for successful grape cultivation. By far the most planted grape in this region is Zinfandel, however, the more profitable Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are both gaining ground, and the wineries that call this appellation home are now experimenting with classic Rhone varietals as well. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

El Dorado on Snooth

  • Vinum Cellars the Scrapper Cabernet Franc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Darkly rich red currant and raspberry fruit aromas with good baking spice and black pepper and a slight note of varietally correct green herb. Nicely rich and full in the mouth, this is fruity and full bodied, showing a lot of spicy acidity, good earthiness from the chew of the tannins, and bright raspberry and black cherry fruit. • The Pilot Hill Gang Cabernet/Merlot El Dorado County 2014

    Snoothrank:

My 1st El Dorado Cnty cabbie. Not the big, rustic wine you'd expect though - finesse to go with a medium body requires layers of fruit, accenting spice and terrior. Earthy with blackberries, dark cherries, mint and pepper put forward a back palate pop at the end - food wine for sure. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More

  • David Girard Vineyards Coda Rouge El Dorado 2012

    Snoothrank:

Beautiful and spicy red fruit aromas leap out of the glass with baking spice, raspberry and licorice framed by touches of soft clay and powdered sugar. Gorgeous in the mouth and quite delicate on entry, this starts out soft, round and full of cherry and raspberry notes, then takes on a bit of an edge, showing tart strawberry, spice, cinnamon and... • Vinum Cellars Red Dirt Red 2013

    Snoothrank:

Ripe plum and fig aromas with clay and earth and a hint of floral rose petal on the inviting nose. Powerful and full on entry, this packs a full fruit wallop of fresh cherry, raspberry and plum flavors, floral hints of violet and a good dose of earth, toast and vanilla on the finish. The cinnamon and clove also on the palate with some licorice s... Read More

  • I'm at least one person who said the merlot is best used to soften up ... ... ... from David Girard, an El Dorado County winery (Sierra Foothills, not far off I-80, the road to N. From the back label78% Syrah/22% Cabernet Sauvignon. Subdued nose. Some barnyard hints, some prune. On the tongue, again it takes a second to detect the sensations.
