The spectacular Sierra Nevada range offers a fitting backdrop to the vineyards of El Dorado County; some of the loftiest in California (ranging from 1,200 to 3,600 feet). In this outdoor playground, a vibrant wine industry plays host to both cutting edge and traditional wineries alike.

The history of grape growing in the region dates to the 1850s when vineyards were planted in the area to quench the thirst of miners and speculators in search of gold. By 1870, El Dorado only trailed Los Angeles and Sonoma Counties in wine production. While the search for precious stone spurred the industry in its early years, the true ‘gold’ of the region is the county’s old vine Zinfandel vines which continue to produce some of California’s most expressive wines. However, despite its world wide reputation for great Zin, El Dorado County (and its three approved AVAs – El Dorado , Fairplay and the Sierra Foothills) are also home to a number of wineries experimenting with an eclectic mélange of varietals. • Pruett Taylor's Reserve Estate Syrah 2013

    Snoothrank:

Quite muted red berries on the tip of the tongue. A little bit of bitterness around the edges and the tip of the tongue. A retro-nasal sensation that suggests eucalyptus. Surprisingly light on tannins. Nothing really bad about this wine, but, also, not, particularly, memorable. Read More

  • Pruett Taylor's Reserve Estate Syrah 2012

    Snoothrank:

Very dark in the glassnot quite Petite Sirah dark, but still. It even has a dark nosedark fruits, prunes, some mustiness. On the tongue Im getting some blackberry, but its not really much of a hit. There is more earthiness or dustiness than fruit. However, this wine is a mouthful. Very full bodied. I like it, but it loses points because of... Read More

  • Sobon Estate Zinfandel Amador County Old Vine 2014

    Snoothrank:

Spicy strawberry and raspberry aromas with a dusty earthiness underneath. Bright and cheerful cherry and strawberry notes on the palate with soft mixed berry fruit and zesty baking spice filling the mid palate. On the finish there's a drying tannic skid and a bit of smoke that plays against more tart fruit and a touch of herb. Read More

  • Vinum Cellars the Scrapper Cabernet Franc 2011

    Snoothrank:

Darkly rich red currant and raspberry fruit aromas with good baking spice and black pepper and a slight note of varietally correct green herb. Nicely rich and full in the mouth, this is fruity and full bodied, showing a lot of spicy acidity, good earthiness from the chew of the tannins, and bright raspberry and black cherry fruit. • The Pilot Hill Gang Cabernet/Merlot El Dorado County 2014

    Snoothrank:

My 1st El Dorado Cnty cabbie. Not the big, rustic wine you'd expect though - finesse to go with a medium body requires layers of fruit, accenting spice and terrior. Earthy with blackberries, dark cherries, mint and pepper put forward a back palate pop at the end - food wine for sure. Drink now - Paul 89 points Read More
