The spectacular Sierra Nevada range offers a fitting backdrop to the vineyards of El Dorado County; some of the loftiest in California (ranging from 1,200 to 3,600 feet). In this outdoor playground, a vibrant wine industry plays host to both cutting edge and traditional wineries alike.

The history of grape growing in the region dates to the 1850s when vineyards were planted in the area to quench the thirst of miners and speculators in search of gold. By 1870, El Dorado only trailed Los Angeles and Sonoma Counties in wine production. While the search for precious stone spurred the industry in its early years, the true ‘gold’ of the region is the county’s old vine Zinfandel vines which continue to produce some of California’s most expressive wines. However, despite its world wide reputation for great Zin, El Dorado County (and its three approved AVAs – El Dorado , Fairplay and the Sierra Foothills) are also home to a number of wineries experimenting with an eclectic mélange of varietals. • Diarie Break Away Zinfandel Sierra Foothills 2009

"Light" appearing red in the glass.maybe a tad darker than the 2009 DiArie Primitivo that I am also tasting, tonight. Fairly light nose with noticeable blackberry aromas. Much rounder and fuller than the Primitivo (still no more than a medium-bodied wine)--more blackberry flavor, maybe not quite as acidic. A fairly simple wine. Very easy to ... Read More

  • Elyse Zinfandel Sierra Foothills 1998

Translucent, purple color. Uh-oh, oxidized aroma is the first nose sensation. On the palate I do get some oxidized flavors and a lot of fruit--blackberries, prunes. With that profile there is definitely the sweet thing going on, here. Medium-bodied and no tannin to speak of. There was probably no reason to keep this wine so long. US$13.99 ... Read More

  •  We had a plan, get in early, get out early. It seems like a lot of people had the get in early plan. In years past we would show up around 11:15, park close and hit the tent before the crowd built. Well not this year. The front parking lot filled up as we approached so we parked across the road and hoofed it in. The place was a zoo from the mom... Read More
