Central Coast Wine

Central Coast is a vast AVA that spans between Santa Barbara County in the south to the San Francisco Bay area in the north, touching six counties within the state of California. This huge expanse encompasses a diverse array of microclimates and growing conditions and is responsible for fifteen percent of the state’s total wine production.

The sub-AVA’s within Central Coast are:
  • San Francisco Bay
  • Monterey
  • San Benito
  • San Luis Obispo
  • Santa Barbara
  • Salado Creek

  • Fetzer Shaly Loam Gewurztraminer 2015

Pours out of the bottle a slightly honeyed mead sort of color....pale grassy yellow would explain it rather well.....it is clear and appears to have some effervescence based on a minute amount of suspended bubbles clinging onto the glass. The aromas are of semi sweet wildflower honey, apples/pears, muted minerality, and orchard fruit flower blo... Read More

  • Hahn Pinot Noir Monterey 2016

I was (in my mind) out on the tiles, and chanced by the Hahn Monterey PN 2016, and bought it to see how their "signature" wines are doing. The wine is kirsch red, with more cherry than strawberry notes on the nose - typical of California PN (subtropical). Entry has loads of leather - another Cali trait, but good fruit and acid, and strawberry ... Read More

It has been a while since tasting this well-respected and nicely priced wine. But in an IGA on Camano Island WA I noticed this wine in a sale bin for about half the normal price.
