AVA, in Amador County, was settled in 1849 and quickly became a supply centre for the surrounding gold mining camps. However, when the gold began to disappear, so did the people. Settlers had planted vines, which were abundant by the late 1800s. After this section of the Mother Lode experienced mass exodus, it was not until the early 1970s that Fiddletown’s loam soil sported vines again. Today, most of the vineyards are on the region’s southern and western hills. They produce grapes that are less forceful in alcohol with more elegant fruit character than the rest of the valley. The appellation is responsible for about 20% of Amador's production. Sitting between 1,500-2,500 feet elevation, this appellation was recognized as distinct from its surroundings by the BATF in November, 1983. – Description from Appellation America (view original content)

  • Renwood Fiddletown Zinfandel 2006

    Snoothrank:

Tasted at 2223 Market St, St on 10/16/10. Very cherry for a zin; maybe a bit on the sweet side. 15% alcohol. Friendly wine, leggy, syrupy. Not a traditional zin...I suspect it's been blended with something. Beautiful color but not the typical zin color (like Seghesio or Rosenblum) Read More

  • Sobon Estate Zinfandel Fiddletown 2007

    Snoothrank:

Very dry and richly tannic. Dense and layered blackberry, blueberry and currant with some leather and bitter dark chocolate. It's lacking some of the spice and jam notes I like in zinfandel, but it's a nice wine. Read More

  • Sobon Estate Zinfandel Fiddletown 2007

    Snoothrank:

Balance of this wine is clearly toward the fruit with rich almost sweet berry flavors. Fruit seems more mixed into rather than integrated with the other elements. Strong nose with spices and hints of vanilla. Warm finish. Medium acid, medium tannin, medium body. For the price might be good for parties but needs some work integrating the f... Read More

  • Renwood Zinfandel Fiddletown 2002

    Snoothrank:

Maybe because it was a 375ml it was too old, or it was kept too warm. Whatever the case, tart, raisiny and over. Renwood generally produces good zins, but be careful. The 750s might still be OK, but this wasn't a good bottle. Read More

This is very near what I really like out of a Zin. Lots of fruit, not overly sweet, and kick, kick you butttom. Really digging Amador Co wine, can't wait to do a tasting tour there. Read More
