USA Wine

"American Wine" has existed since the first Europeans brought their vinous heritage and traditions to these shores from the Old World. In that sense, Appellation America is over 400 years old. American wine has endured ecological, political and social hardships over the centuries, but it has evolved with each challenge.
Up to the late 1800s, the vine thrived in America, with the epicenter of winemaking in the Midwest along the banks of the Ohio River and shores of Lake Erie. At the turn of the last century phylloxera and Prohibition would together transform the viticultural landscape of America. In the 20th century, California would emerge as America’s dominate wine state (now producing 90% of the national total), but by the dawn of the 21st century winemaking would spread to every state in the union, with grapes grown in all but four. Across the 50 states exists the world's greatest diversity of climates, and virtually every species of vine can find a niche somewhere Read more »

  • Sbragia Family Chardonnay Dry Creek Valley Home Ranch 2008

    Snoothrank:

Golden hue. Appears oxygen is getting the best of this wine (unsure how well it was kept prior to my purchase). Rather odd aroma of wet grains, like beer wort. A savory cashew, pistachio nuttiness. Guava, dried pineapple and quince paste on the nose as well. Pear tart, toasted brioche, heavy baking spices especially nutmeg on the palate. V... Read More

  • Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain 1995

    Snoothrank:

Open oer 24 hours and I got the last bit, so I believe oxygen robbed me of this experience. Nose of stewed red berry and currant. Tomato leaf and red berry compote aromas. Oxidation setting in. All red currant and stewed red fruit with some herbs. Read More

  • Sbragia Family Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County Monte Rosso Vineyard 2002

    Snoothrank:

Beautiful perfume of red berry. Aromas of currant, raspberry, strawberry and cherry with licorice hints. Luscious ripe red berry fruit on the palate. This wine is peaking now in my opinion. Ripe red currant and cherry flavors. Really beautiful fruit. Great acidity and tannin still, but is driven by pretty fruit tones. Very fragrant. Drin... Read More

  • Cristom Pinot Noir Jessie Vineyard 2003

    Snoothrank:

Brick red in the glass. Lightly smoky nose. Peppery dried herb and plum fruit on the nose. Spicy profile. Diminishing fruit, so all that's left is plum. Fleshy. Stony minerality. Zesty herb and white pepper notes. Nice, but needs food. Cinnamon dust influence. Drink now.89 pts.5/18/13 Read More

  • Chateau St. Jean Merlot 2010

    Snoothrank:

Bold berry and plum flavors combined with mellow spices make this wine easy to accept, enjoy and understand. The tannins and texture are finely balanced. 15 minutes into the wine and blackberry becomes very apparent and exciting. Pricing is very reasonable with this all around winner. Read More

  • Hobo Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

An interesting if unremarkable Zinfandel. Interesting because it often the best California red available in some restaurants. The wine is slightly dilute, with notes of blackberry. One can't help wondering if a slightly lower alcohol percentage than 14.4 would help round out this wine. Read More
