Sion is a town and wine region at the heart of the Valais canton in Switzerland. The town has a signficant history. By the end of the first century BC, it was the capital of the Seduni, one of the four main Celtic tribes of the Valais. By the 2nd and 3rd centuries, after the Romans took over, it was called Sedunum, and the town hall still bears the Latin inscription, “Civitas Sedunorum Patrono.” The Roman Catholic diocese of Sion is the oldest in Switzerland. The 12th century Basilique de Valère and the ruins of 13th century Tourbillon Castle are still major historical landmarks. With so rich a background in cultures with imbibing propensities, there is no doubt wine has always been a part of everyday life.
